Modular Bamboo Structure Workshop

The Modular compost toilet workshop is a 4 week immersive learning experience that offers the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of new age modular constructions with environmental friendly building materials for a compost toilet and shower units proposed for the Auroville community ‘Joy of impermanence’, while engaging in a unique self-inquiry in the company of an international team of mentors and facilitators.  The Camp takes place in Auroville, a dynamic international community committed to sustainable living, radical experimentation and personal development.

The workshop offers many-fold experience in the realm of conscious approach towards:
Architecture, modular Bamboo structures, Bamboo carpentry, Prefabrication systems, sustainable lifestyle, community living, traditional building practices, Compost toilet design technologies and a holistic approach towards human poop cycle and sanitation systems.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

The Modular compost toilet workshop is perfect for anyone who wants to gain skills and hands-on experience working with bamboo, one of the most eco-friendly building materials, while also exploring various aspects of sustainable living. It is for anyone who is concerned about building a more environmentally sustainable world.

An essential aspect of building a more sustainable world is the quality of the consciousness we bring to it.  Our outer environment – whether built or natural – reflects the state of our inner awareness.  For that reason, part of this programme will also focus on expanding awareness, exploring how “inner” space relates to the world we construct “outside.”

Our Mission: To manifest functional projects from conception to completion, and in the process sustain and evolve as an architect.

PROGRAMME OUTLINE

The Modular compost toilet workshop will take place over 4 weeks, with multiple sessions offered daily from 9 AM to 5 PM.  The sessions are offered according to three areas of focus, as follows:

1. Natural Building with Bamboo

As a core component of the workshop camp, participants will gain the basic knowledge, skills and practice needed for bamboo construction, as well as technologies that use bamboo in combination with other materials.  Sessions include:

  • Harvesting life cycle of Bamboo
  • Treatments

These sessions of the workshop will be an overall approach towards the sanitation systems, compost toilet techniques, conscious architectural designs, and hands-on practical tasks of the modular construction system. The learners will be able to take away the knowledge of modular bamboo constructions and will be able to implement these new learned skills for personal development or consultancy to spread knowledge and awareness.

3. Basics of Sustainable Living

As one of the largest and most well-established eco-communities in the world, Auroville offers many learning opportunities for people interested in sustainable living.  As part of Community living in the Modular compost toilet workshop, we will explore some of the most inspiring projects and communities in Auroville.

4. from Bamboo Construction to Self-Construction

Along with learning about modular bamboo construction and sustainable living, participants will be introduced to various embodied and creative practices designed to expand self-awareness.  For this “inner” dimension of the programme, the relationship between body, nature, and space will be explored through movement, sound, and play with a traditional martial art/Dance art form from Brazil called CAPOEIRA.  These sessions will be facilitated by expert capoeiristas from Auroville Capoeira group ‘Ginga Saroba’. For more information on this traditional art form please visit: http://ginga-saroba.com/
