The Faculty of Economic Sciences of the University of Warsaw invites applications for a full-time fixed term positions* in Economics and Finance with a specialization in:

  • finance/banking/accounting at the Assistant Professor level (research-didactic) - ref. no. WNE/KK/2/2021,
  • finance/banking/accounting at the Assistant Professor level (didactic) - ref. no. WNE/KK/3/2021,
  • macroeconomics at the Assistant Professor level (research-didactic) - ref. no. WNE/KK/4/2021,
  • macroeconomics at the Assistant Professor level (didactic) - ref. no. WNE/KK/5/2021,

starting in October 2021 in Warsaw, Poland.

* Possible extension for an indefinite period.

ABOUT THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS SCIENCES

Faculty of Economic Sciences of the University of Warsaw is the best scientific unit in Poland in the field of economics and finance with a vibrant research community.

In Research Papers in Economics (RePEc) - the largest non-commercial bibliographic database on economics and finance, the Faculty of Economic Sciences is among 3% of the best economic institutions in Europe and on the 1st place in Poland. According to the same RePEc ranking among top 25% authors in Poland, ¼ are researchers from the Faculty of Economic Sciences.

At the Faculty of Economic Sciences there are currently over sixty national and international research projects carried out, funded by the European Union, the National Centre for Research and Development and the Ministry of Education and Science. One of the projects currently realised at the Faculty of Economics Sciences is a prestigious Consolidator Grant granted by the European Research Council (ERC) to prof. Anna Matysiak for the project "Globalization-and Technology-Driven Labour Market Change and Fertility (LABFER)".

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF WARSAW

The Faculty of Economic Sciences is part of the University of Warsaw, which in 2020, kept developing one of its strategic programmes – the “Initiative of Excellence” (IDUB). In 2019, the University of Warsaw was granted Research University status for 2020-2026. Thanks to the funding, the University will execute 70 measures specified in the application, including programmes supporting the potential of employees, doctoral candidates and students. Dynamic international cooperation of the University of Warsaw is an opportunity for researchers to cooperate with research centres all over the world, within the 4EU+ Alliance among others.

The University of Warsaw completed requirements and implemented the principles underlying the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. The award confirms that the school, research institution or company offers a favourable scientific work environment and the recruitment rules in force are fully transparent.

The University of Warsaw achieved the 1st place in the "Poland's Best Employers 2021" ranking carried out by Forbes Poland in the industry report "Higher education and science". Ranking was based on the assessed components such as the willingness of employees to recommend their employer and willingness of employees to instruct other employers in the industry in which the respondents were currently employed. Employees assessed their employers on issues such as salaries, working time, promotion and development opportunities, office and remote working conditions as well as equipment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & REQUIREMENTS

Assistant Professor (research-didactic) specializing in finance/banking/accounting

WNE/KK/2/2021

Key responsibilities

  • Substantial research activity in the field of economics and finance (i.e. finance, banking and/or accounting). Publication of the results in reputable scholarly journals of substantial international standing. Obtaining funding for research projects in grant competitions.
  • Teaching courses relating to finance, banking, accounting or associated fields with a total teaching load of 210 contact hours per year. Courses should be offered in Polish and/or English.
  • Academic organizational activities, including: involvement in the work of selected university and departmental committees and contribution to international scholarly endeavours (editorial and review work, conferences, etc.).

Formal requirements (must have):

  • at least a PhD degree in the discipline of economics and finance or in the field of the social sciences.

Academic track record (must have):

  • substantial achievements in the discipline of economics and finance, measured predominantly in terms of articles published in reputable journals of substantial international standing;
  • substantial research activity (including research funding obtained, research projects led);
  • international experience (including international cooperation undertaken);
  • teaching experience (preferable experience in conducting classes in the field of finance, banking and/or accounting);
  • proficiency level written and spoken English (C2).

The following will be advantageous:

  • other significant achievements (e.g., prizes, awards) and experience (e.g., editorial work for reputable journals of substantial international standing).

Key responsibilities

  • Teaching courses relating to finance, banking, accounting or associated fields with a total teaching load of 360 contact hours per year. Courses should be offered in Polish and/or English.
  • Academic organizational activities, including: involvement in the work of selected university and departmental committees.

Formal requirements (must have):

  • at least a PhD degree in the discipline of economics and finance or in the field of the social sciences.

Academic track record (must have):

  • at least five years of teaching experience in the field of economics and finance (preferable experience in conducting classes in the field of finance, banking and/or accounting);
  • high didactic skills (confirmed in particular by the results of student surveys or awards and prizes for didactic activity);
  • proficiency level written and spoken English (C2).

The following will be advantageous:

  • other significant achievements (e.g., prizes, awards) and teaching and knowledge dissemination publications (e.g. textbooks, articles).

Assistant Professor (research-didactic) specializing in macroeconomics

Key responsibilities

  • Research work in the discipline of economics and finance, the results of which should be published in journals with international recognition. Obtaining funding for research projects in grant competitions. Participation in international conferences.
  • The selected candidate will teach courses at the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the University of Warsaw as an assistant professor with a total teaching load of 210 hours a year, including macroeconomics classes for 1st and 2nd degree students, BA / MA seminars and / or specialist classes. The selected candidate will teach courses in the English or/and Polish language. We expect candidates to be involved in teaching with care for raising the quality of classes and care for linking teaching with the recent research and with use of suitable computer packages.
  • Assistance in the organization of conferences, seminars, workshops; participation in committees.

Formal requirements (must have):

  • at least a PhD degree in the discipline of economics and finance.

Academic track record (must have):

  • substantial achievements in the discipline of economics, preferably in the field of macroeconomics (including article(s) published in journal(s) with international recognition and participation with a presentation at international conferences);
  • excellent research activity (including engagement in funded research projects, working papers with potential to be published in journals with international recognition);
  • international experience (including scientific degrees awarded by foreign institutions and/or cooperation with established scientists from foreign research institutions);
  • teaching experience (including conducting or being teaching assistant for classes in the field of economics, especially macroeconomics and international economics classes at undergraduate and graduate level);
  • knowledge of the English language at a level sufficient to teach at undergraduate and graduate level.

The following will be advantageous:

  • other special achievements (e.g., honors, scholarships, awards);
  • advanced knowledge and skills related to economic modelling in macroeconomics, quantitative economics, and time-series econometrics;
  • experience in suitable computer packages, including Stata®, MATLAB®.

  • The selected candidate will teach courses at the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the University of Warsaw as an adjunct professor with a total teaching load of 360 hours a year, including macroeconomics classes for 1st and 2nd degree students, BA / MA seminars and / or specialist classes. The selected candidate will teach courses in the English or/and Polish language. We expect candidates to be involved in teaching with care for raising the quality of classes and care for linking teaching with the recent research and with use of suitable computer packages.
  • Assistance in the organization of conferences, seminars, workshops; participation in committees.

Formal requirements (must have):

  • at least a PhD degree in the discipline of economics and finance.

Academic track record (must have):

  • teaching experience of at least five years (including classes in the field of economics, especially macroeconomics and international economics classes);

Candidates applying for the position should submit the following documents within the deadline set out in this announcement:

  • an academic curriculum vitae containing information on research and teaching experience and achievements, including education, work experience, publications, research projects;
  • a covering letter with the candidate's reasons for applying, including planned research and teaching activities if successful (two A4 pages maximum);
  • a signed application to the Rector of the University of Warsaw together with the required declarations (Appendix no. 1).

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Applications will be evaluated by the Faculty Selection Committee. The Faculty reserves the right to respond only to certain applications. The competition may be closed without a selection being made, if there is no candidate who meets the formal requirements and possesses an adequate academic track record.

Candidates may be invited for an interview (in person or remotely) with the Faculty Selection Committee. Candidates will be contacted individually to schedule such an interview.

The competition is the first stage of the employment procedure for an academic teacher, as specified in the Statute of the University of Warsaw. A positive outcome is the required basis for further proceedings.
