The Cluster of Excellence on “The Politics of Inequality: Perceptions, Participation and Policies” at the University of Konstanz was established in January 2019. The Cluster’s researchers analyze the political dimension of inequality from an interdisciplinary perspective combining political science, sociology, economics, linguistics, empirical education research and social psychology.

The Cluster offers doctoral positions to highly motivated graduates with an outstanding Master’s degree or equivalent, obtained in a field which is relevant to the Cluster’s research agenda. The Cluster has three primary Research Areas:

  1. Perceptions, which studies subjective perceptions of inequality and how they are related to the formation of preferences and attitudes with a particular focus on the role of framing effects;
  2. Participation, in which we investigate to what extent perceptions of inequality are related to patterns of political mobilization and participation;
  3. Policies, where we study whether policy-making processes are responsive to public demands and political mobilization and how these policy responses, in turn, affect structural inequalities.

PhD candidates pursue their doctoral research projects independently or as part of the project teams in one of the Cluster’s research projects (https://www.exc.uni-konstanz.de/en/inequality/research/projects/).

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to join the new Graduate School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (GSBS), which will be established in the fall of 2020. The Cluster “The Politics of Inequality” offers a vibrant international and interdisciplinary research environment and community.

Your application, which must be sent by 15 April 2020, must include the following documents: Full curriculum vitae; official transcript of records for all studies; degree certificates; a one-page statement of purpose detailing your intended research project and its fit with the Cluster’s research programme, in particular its research areas; proof of English proficiency; and two separate letters of recommendation.

The Graduate School of Decision Sciences handles the application process. Full information on the necessary application documents and requirements, as well as the online application portal, can be found at: https://www.gsds.uni-konstanz.de/application/how-to-apply.
