The European Commission's Directorate for Sustainable Resources (Joint Research Centre) is looking for an Economic Modeller in the fields of Food Security and Agriculture in Africa to join its Unit "Economics of Agriculture" based in Seville, Spain.

As the science and knowledge service of the European Commission, the mission of DG Joint Research Centre (JRC) is to support EU policies with independent evidence throughout the whole policy cycle. The Unit "Economics of Agriculture" focuses on the analysis of agricultural and trade policies in the EU and third countries. The focus of its work is expanding to take into account the impact of agricultural policy in other domains such as the environment, climate change or food security. In addition it is also analysing the impact of policies designed to tackle those domains on agricultural activities. The policy support provided by the Unit is based on quantitative economic research, in particular using economic modelling tools. In collaboration with the Water and Marine Resources Unit located in Ispra (Italy), the unit is now engaging in new activities analysing the use of water in the agricultural sector and its impacts on energy, food and ecosystems.

The Unit is looking for an economic researcher to contribute to the quantitative analysis of climate change mitigation and adaptation policies in EU agriculture.

More specifically his/her main tasks will be:

  • data analysis and development of SAMs
  • development of CGE models (writing programming code);
  • conduct economic analyses, including preparation and presentation of reports, summaries of results for policy makers and academic papers;
  • initiate, manage and monitor related research projects; this will include the preparation of technical specifications and validating and evaluating research results and publications; draft reports for policy makers;
  • contribute to the cooperation with policy services and development of the international network of cooperation of JRC.

 

Qualifications

  • a PhD in Agricultural Economics or similar subject or 5 years of research experience in Agricultural Economics or similar subject, after university studies of at least 3 years attested by a diploma, plus proved experience in quantitative analysis and economic modelling;
  • a very good level of written and spoken English (C1); knowledge of French is an additional asset.

He/she should have

  • a solid experience in quantitative methods/tools for economic assessments;
  • should be familiar with CGE models (essential);
  • a good knowledge of GAMS programming language (essential);
  • knowledge of statistical packages (STATA, R) and econometric techniques (desirable)
  • a good understanding of development economics topics (desirable);
  • the ability to manage and monitor research projects, good communication skills and ability to work in a multi-cultural and interdisciplinary environment.

Indicative duration: 3 years initial contract with possible renewals up to maximum 6 years

Location: Seville, Spain.
