Based in St. John’s and reporting to the Associate Vice-President, (Marine Institute), Administration and Finance, working collaboratively with the leadership team at MI and the department of Financial and Administrative Services (St. John’s Campus), the Manager, Finance and Contracts leads the financial administration and services for MI ensuring that campus objectives are achieved and are in compliance with University policies and procedures. Supervising a team of 11 staff, the position plans, manages and delivers a broad range of financial services and functions including: contract review and administration, budgeting, contract/project accounting, financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, travel, procurement, cashiering, information/client relations, and accounting services for owned and un-owned separately incorporated entities. The Manager provides advice and guidance on university policies and procedures, informs budgetary decision making by the senior executive of MI and analyzes a variety of information for preparation of management reports. Liaising with officials from across the University including legal counsel, the manager prepares and reviews legal documents (contracts, memoranda of understating, professional services agreements etc.) for all MI activity including industrial response training, applied research, partnerships and collaborations. The position is also a member of various committees on both the MI and St. John’s Campuses.
The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge and experience (8-10 years) in progressively responsible financial management roles, possess a minimum of an undergraduate degree in Commerce or Business Administration supplemented by a Chartered Professional Accountant designation. Experience in contract review with a thorough understanding of contract language is essential. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills with a strong ability to listen and effectively advocate, creatively problem solve and confidently work through difficult budgetary issues. Other required competencies include: excellent facilitation and presentation skills, change management skills, and project management skills. An ability to build and maintain strong relationships and deliver quality service to all client groups is critical to this role. An equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered.
