Extension Educator 5 Energy, Business and Community Vitality

The College of Agricultural Sciences is seeking an individual trained in economics, agricultural economics, business, agricultural business management, entrepreneurship and/or related field to join our nationally recognized Energy, Business and Community Vitality Unit within Penn State Extension. Penn State Extension is an organization on the move and a leader in learning environment innovation. We are implementing a new business platform and product development process aimed at enhancing our reach and value to 21st Century stakeholders. The successful candidate will be responsible for actively working within one or more Program Teams to identify principles important to starting, managing, leading and transitioning businesses, especially as it relates to agriculture, food systems, and natural resource development. The individual will establish learning objectives, develop educational events and materials to support the learning objectives, and utilize evaluations to measure program success. Candidates will have a general understanding of agriculture, natural resources, food systems and the environment. Program Team members will work to conduct applied research relevant to target audience needs. The individual must be able to work effectively in a team and with diverse populations and audiences. The successful candidate will need to develop and/or participate in collaborations across multiple disciplines, departments, colleges, and institutions. All team members must participate in the development of a diverse external funding portfolio (e.g. grants, contracts, cost recovery, development) in support of the team's programs. The individual will develop original content to engage audiences through innovative educational methods such as online courses, videos, mobile apps, and electronic publications, in addition to traditional publications and in-person presentations. Educational programs should result in measurable improvements for farm, food, and natural resource businesses through development, growth, efficiency, competitiveness, and local job creation. The position is based in Somerset County (6024 Glades Pike, Suite 101, Somerset, PA 15501). The educator will be part of a state unit and expected to participate in one or more Program Teams and deliver programs statewide, including a small (5%) commitment to pesticide education. Typically requires a Master's degree or higher (Ph.D. or D.Ed. preferred) or higher plus seven years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference will be given to candidates with degree(s) in economics, agricultural economics, business, agricultural business management, business management, entrepreneurship, or related disciplines, and those that have related work experience in farm management, risk management, business development and decision-making. Candidates should have a basic knowledge of, and commitment to, food, agriculture and natural resources and enjoy the challenge of working as a team member on a wide variety of educational efforts. Candidates must possess effective communication skills (verbal and written), teaching skills, interpersonal skills, the ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues and clientele, supervision skills, and work as an active member of a team. The candidate must be very organized and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Desired experience includes teaching, curriculum development, evaluation, grant management, understanding of business/farm tax management, and proficiency in use of computer software packages, such as Microsoft products suite, FinPack, and statistics software. Superior Microsoft Excel skills or advanced database skills and fluency in Spanish are a plus. The candidate must be able to carry equipment, and educational materials and supplies, with or without accommodation. Some travel (including overnight trips) is required. The candidate must possess a valid driver's license and have use of a private vehicle. Since the position requires operating a motor vehicle as part of the job duties, successful completion of a motor vehicle records check is required, as well as standard background checks.
