Berkeley Lab’s Energy Analysis and Environment Impacts (EAEI) Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Energy Efficiency for Development (EE4D) program and it’s new activity on Gender Equality and Energy Efficiency.
EE4D is a global program which provides technical resources and expert advice to developing countries to support energy efficiency improvements in order to promote a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable economic development. The Gender Equality and Energy Efficiency project has a goal to unlock the benefits of modern energy access for women and enhance their role as agents of change in promoting clean, affordable, and efficient energy use in Africa.
In this role, you will develop surveys for data collection, analyze data, develop cost-benefit assessments, and end-use energy consumption modeling tools that show the impact and economic opportunities for increasing access to efficient use of electricity for women. Additionally, this role will involve stakeholder engagement, community engagement, and outreach communication strategies to increase project impacts.
We are looking for a talented researcher with specific interests in the area of gender equality assessments as it pertains to energy use and productive use of energy in developing countries.
What You Will Do:
- Conduct research on the economic and social implications of energy access programs and the role of energy efficiency to promote a more inclusive and sustainable economic development.
- Develop techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment of efficient electric equipment adoption in developing countries and analysis policy and program implications.
- Assess the financing opportunities to accelerate the adoption of energy-efficient equipment through programs that serve women entrepreneurs.
- Organize and conduct workshops to disseminate work plans, methods, techniques, intervention strategies, and results.
- Engage with local communities to create general awareness about the efficient and productive use of energy and to develop field-based research analysis and program recommendations. This will be done with the help of local consultants.
- Produce and disseminate communication materials about the program and work with government agencies and NGOs to recommend program designs that can scale up penetration of efficient electric equipment in identified sectors.
- Write and contribute to reports and journal papers summarizing methods, results, conclusions, and/or socio-economic policy implications.
- Contribute to developing project plans, reporting progress, and proposals development for new research.
What is Required:
- A recent Ph.D. cross disciplinary field of study related to environment and/or energy.
- Demonstrated project experience in community-engaged research and social inclusion.
- Research experience in data analytics, statistics methods, survey assessment and techno-economic analyses.
- Understanding of issues relating to energy demand, energy efficiency and productive use of energy in developing countries, as well as end-use energy technologies and policies.
- Understanding of issues relating to gender issues and on the design and implementation of policies and programs to address these issues.
- Proven experience in the developing country context and working in different cultural settings.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills including the ability to clearly and concisely publicly present material and contribute to publications.
- Willingness to learn and identify methodologies and applications from other fields such as randomized control testing as applicable for solving inclusive and sustainable development analysis.
- Ability to engage with local and international NGOs and stakeholders and forge productive working relationships.

- Experience working with senior government officials to make policy recommendations.
- Proficiency in a foriegn language.

- This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years of paid postdoctoral experience.
