Applications are invited for an environmental economist (or, more generally, an economist with relevant skills) to work full time as a Postdoctoral Impact Fellow on The South West Partnership for Environment and Economic Prosperity (SWEEP) project. Working closely with the environmental economics group in Exeter’s Land, Environment, Economics and Policy Institute, the postholder will join an interdisciplinary team of social and natural scientists who are engaging directly with government and business to address a range of environmental problems across the South West of England.
In the first instance, the key areas of engagement will be twofold. First, working with the Dartmoor and Exmoor National Park Authorities, the postholder will advise in the development of natural capital accounts, accounts that will direct future environmental investments across the parks. Second, the postholder will work with South West Water in helping design the next generation of innovative Payment for Ecosystem Service (PES) schemes to be implemented under their Upstream Thinking programme from 2019. Subsequently, the postholder will work with the National Park authorities, the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the North Devon Terrestrial Pioneer in advising on the possible design of locally-focused agri-environment schemes.
SWEEP is an exciting new 5-year project in partnership with Plymouth University and Plymouth Marine Laboratory, funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). SWEEP Impact Fellows will have a unique opportunity to develop research facing skills within a leading research intensive University, whilst also working directly with non-academic partners and stakeholders to deliver impact and real world change. We are seeking to recruit the research leaders of tomorrow, who are passionate about delivering impact from research.
The successful applicant will be about to complete their PhD (if appointed on Grade E), or have completed a PhD (if appointed on Grade F) that provides them with a solid grounding in economics and with specialist expertise in the areas of non-market valuation (with particular emphasis on natural capital accounting) and/or mechanism design. They will be able to collaborate effectively within the academic team and with external partners.
