The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) addresses crucial scientific questions in the fields of global change, climate impacts, and sustainable development. At PIK, researchers from the natural and social sciences work together to generate interdisciplinary insights and to provide society with sound information for decision-making.

Job description

Aiming for deep decarbonization increasingly requires measures targeting the demand side and in particular smaller consumers like households. Important fields of action include the decarbonization of light-duty vehicle transportation, activating the demand side to consume green electricity, and energy efficient behavior. “Prosumage” and “internalities” are two of many keywords that indicate this emerging trend. We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to investigate these issues, with a particular focus on issues of immediate policy relevance in the German and EU context as well as other jurisdictions (Australia, California).

Your main responsibilities will be to

  • contribute to three ongoing international projects on the interlinkage of climate and sustainable development (CD-LINKS), on low-carbon pathways for the European Union (Innopaths) and the energy transition in Australia and Germany (START) in the above mentioned topics
  • conduct empirical analysis to advance the understanding of how policies and (climate and other) externalities affect consumer and firm behavior, and explore new policy options on that basis
  • collaborate with other researchers at PIK who mainly employ numerical models, and seek cooperation with other leading international experts in this field

In addition, we encourage & support you to pursue your own research interests, which should have thematic and/or methodological overlap with the above responsibilities. In particular research on the design and analysis of climate & energy policies would very well align with the current research activities of prospective colleagues, where individual research will be coordinated with group activities. Time available for doing so will depend on eventual project workload.

Working Environment

The successful candidate will be working in the “Energy Strategies Europe & Germany” research group lead by Michael Pahle. The group is part of Research Domain III co-chaired by Ottmar Edenhofer, who also serves as chief economist and deputy director of PIK.

Requirements

  • You hold a PhD in economics or another social science with a quantitative empirical orientation.
  • You have profound knowledge of quantitative empirical methods/econometrics and excellent analytical skills; knowledge of optimization software (GAMS or similar) is an asset.
  • You have previously worked on topics related to consumer/firm behavior in transportation, energy consumption, and/or energy efficiency.
  • You are willing to supervise PhD and Master students, and to develop & coordinate research proposals. Existing experience in doing so is an asset.
  • Your academic record underlines your ability to publish in top-ranked journals in the fields of energy & climate economics and policy as well as related interdisciplinary journals.
  • Your working style is team-oriented and you have strong communication skills, both verbally and in written form.
  • You are highly proficient in English. At least a basic knowledge of German, or the willingness to acquire it, is essential. Proficiency in an additional language, in particular French or Polish, is an asset.

Conditions

  • The envisaged starting date for the position is January 2018.
  • We offer a 2-year contract, with possible extension. Payment will be according to the German E 13 TV-L tariff scheme.
