The research department "Migration and International Labour Studies" is looking for a research associate (full time position) in the field of international migration, forced displacement, self-selection and labor market integration of refugees.
We are looking to fill a post-doc position for the DFG project „Refugees from Ukraine in Germany: a longitudinal study in the context of the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees (SUARE)“ Subproject 2: forced displacement and labour market integration of refugees from Ukraine.
The project is a cooperation with the at DIW in Berlin and the Free University in Berlin. The research project pursues three objectives. First, the project aims to study the selectivity of forced migration and return migration of Ukrainian refugees in Germany and thus the selectivity of the refugee population, particularly considering the effect of uncertainty about the outcome of the war. Second, the project aims to understand the labour market integration of Ukrainian refugees with a special focus on (i) the consequences of the uncertainty, (ii) the gender-specific labour market trajectories, and (iii) the effects of the specific institutional setup in Germany.
Third, the plan is to develop a longitudinal database for research on refugee migration and the economic and social integration of refugees from Ukraine together with the project partners: Ukraine Longitudinal Study of Ukrainian Refugees (SUARE), which will be a part of the original IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees. Next to research it will be part of your task to develop the questionnaires and experimental formats like vignettes or list experiments.
The research department collects in cooperation with the research center of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) and the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) at DIW the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey on Refugees. By working on the development of the survey you can make an important contribution to the data infrastructure in the national and international area of migration and integration research and develop your own research agenda.
You have a degree in social or economic sciences and preferably have completed or are about to complete a doctorate. Good knowledge in the field of forced displacement and migration as well as of quantitative methods and the relevant software (e.g. STATA or R) is a prerequisite. Experience with the IAB administrative data and the SOEP survey “Living in Germany” are desirable. Publications in international journals and good knowledge of longitudinal surveys and other micro and macro data sets in the field of migration and integration are an advantage.

IAB is offering the successful applicant the chance to work in a dynamic research environment with a strong impact on economic policy consulting. Candidates with a completed doctoral degree have the opportunity to apply for the IAB’s tenure-track system. IAB also provides active support to postdocs in advancing their postdoctoral qualification, by offering generous travel funding and the participation in a variety of qualification measures. This is a fixed-term full-time position (expiring on 31 December 2022), with the possibility of further extensions and a tenure track. The remuneration is according to the Federal Employment Agency’s statutory salary scale and its associated benefits. Remuneration corresponds to at least TE II, Level 1 (currently about 4.200 € gross earnings for a full-time position). With a completed doctorate or with at least two peer-reviewed publications (with two co-authored publications corresponding to one single authored publication), remuneration amounts at least to TE I, Level 1 (currently 4.700 € gross earnings for a full-time position).
