The Institute for Employment Research (IAB) is the research institute of the German Federal Employment Agency.
The department “Active Labor Market Policies and Integration” of IAB invites applications for a Doctoral or Postdoc Position. This is a full-time position fixed-term contract starting on November 1, 2019 and ending June 30, 2021.
The candidate is supposed to work within the project “Labor market policy assignment at entry into unemployment: Analysis using machine learning techniques and randomized controlled trials” which is funded by the Priority Program “The German Labor Market in a Globalized World: Challenges through Trade, Technology, and Demographics” (SPP 1764) of the German Research Foundation (DFG).
We expect you to apply microeconometric and machine learning methods to i) predict the duration of unemployment and ii) estimate heterogeneous treatment effects of selected active labor market policy measures. The analysis will be based on administrative data of the German Federal Employment Agency. Findings should be published in refereed journals as well as in reports aimed at the broad public.
Qualifications and experience
The ideal candidate should have an excellent degree in economics, computer science, sociology, mathematics or statistics, good knowledge of English and some experience in applying software packages suited for using machine learning techniques (R, Python). Ideally, the candidate would already be familiar with machine learning techniques and have some experience regarding administrative data. Some knowledge of German would be of advantage. We further expect him/her to be highly motivated and to be able to work independently as well as within a team.

You will work in an exciting research project to be conducted in cooperation with the University of Bristol. During your work at IAB, you will have access to a wide range of professional and methodical training courses. The DFG Priority Program, which supports the projects, offers you the opportunity to exchange and network with other participating scientists through two annual meetings.
Depending on your personal requirements, you will be recruited as a doctoral student or PostDoc. Your salary is determined according to the Public Employment Services salary scheme; depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate TE I or TE II. Part time is possible.
