The certificate program is a non-degree post baccalaureate program of study preparing students for an initial teaching certificate and is available in elementary education. UAS provides institutional recommendation to the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development which grants certification for grades K-8. The certificate program is only offered through e-Learning and is only available to students in urban and rural communities throughout the state of Alaska. Candidates in this program must be self-directed learners, must have access to high speed Internet connections, and must schedule time during the school year to complete weekly intensive practicum assignments and a semester of student teaching in an elementary or middle school. Practicum courses are available only to students admitted to the elementary teacher certificate program. Courses are delivered via audio conference, DVD, computer conferencing, and correspondence. Students should be familiar with using email, the Internet, computer conferencing, and should have fax access. Certificate students must receive approval of the local school district, as extensive practicum experiences are required.
