CALL FOR INDIVIDUAL DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS

A call for applications to two individual doctoral fellowships for the PhD in Economics | Finance at Nova School of Business and Economics, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal, is now open.

This program is funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, IP (FCT, IP) with whom the selected fellows will sign a contract.

The Admissions Committee (AC) of the PhD in Economics | Finance, composed by the Program Director and at least two faculty members of Nova School of Business and Economics, selects the students who will hold the fellowships. In the present call the composition of the AC is the following: Prof. Miguel Ferreira (President), Prof. Susana Peralta, Prof. Fernando Anjos.

 

Doctoral Fellowships (two grants)

These doctoral fellowships are framed by ‘Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação Científica’, approved by ‘Lei n.º 40/2004 de 18 de Agosto’, republished by ‘Decreto-Lei n.º 202/2012 de 27 de Agosto’, and by the ‘Regulamento de Bolsas da Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia’, and aimed at those who comply with the requirements of ‘n.º 1 of Artigo 30º’ from the ‘Decreto-Lei n.º 74/2006, de 24 de Março’, amended by ‘Decreto-Lei n.º. 107/2008, de 25 de Junho’, and ‘Decreto-Lei n.º 230/2009, de 14 de Setembro’. The fellowships are annual, renewable up to a maximum of four years and cannot be awarded for less than six consecutive months.

 

  1. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

All nationals of Portugal or other countries are eligible to apply.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree diploma in Economics, Finance, or related fields, and should have a good level of competence in English. If you don’t have a Master’s Degree but expect to obtain it by June 2020, your application for the fellowship can also be considered.

 

  1. PERIOD OF APPLICATIONS

The call for applications is open between 12 December 2019 and 31 January 2020.

 

  1.      APPLICATIONS

Applications should be sent through the online application platform for the PhD in Economics | Finance available at novasbe.pt.

Applications are reviewed by the AC and selected upon a thorough analysis of the documents provided. Applications are analyzed on an individual basis and in comparison with the other candidates.

The final decision will be communicated to the candidates by email before 15 April 2019.

 

Mandatory documents:

  1. Curriculum Vitae;  
  2. Transcript of records of undergraduate and graduate degrees with full list of courses and grades. Candidates who have not yet finished their graduate program should provide a certificate of enrolment with, if available, the full list of grades achieved to date;
  3. Recommendations in the form of two letters of reference, which should be sent directly by referees (as explained in the Online Application Instructions available at the application platform);
  4. Statement of purpose - including areas of interest and potential supervisors;
  5. Certificate of results for the GRE (Graduate Records of Examination) or GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test). Applicants who hold, or will shortly hold, a Nova SBE Master’s degree are not required to submit GRE results.

Additional Information

The documents mentioned below are not required during the application. However, they will have to be submitted upon provisional awarding of the fellowship during the contract signing stage. Since some of these documents may take a while to obtain applicants are advised to have the following documents ready so that they can sign the contract without unnecessary delays:

  1. Copy of the document of identification - citizen card, or passport;
  2. Applicants applying for mixed stay, who are Portuguese citizens or citizens of a European Union Member State, should submit proof of permanent and regular residence in a country of the European Union;

The documents which provide proof of residence are, according to the nationality of the applicants:

  • Residence certificate, issued by the Junta de Freguesia of the area (for Portuguese applicants);
  • EU citizen registration certificate, issued by the town council,   or certificate of permanent residence for the EU, issued by the Immigration and Borders Services (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras) (for citizens of a European Union Member State).
  • Applicants who are citizens of Third Countries may apply with a certificate of permanent residence for the EU, issued by Immigration and Borders Services (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras).
  1. Proof of current state of employment in the form of a solemn declaration stating that, if selected, you are aware that you’ll need to respect the exclusivity status demanded by the FCT as mentioned in the ‘Regulamento de Bolsas da Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia’

 

  1. EVALUATION

The candidates are ranked according to the following criteria:

1. Grades obtained in previous cycles of studies, with prominence given to the highest cycle completed. The quality of the institutions where the studies have been performed will also be considered. Together, both grade(s) and quality of institution(s) will be graded in a scale from 1-20, and weight 40% of the final score.

2. Letters of reference provided by referees are graded by the AC in a scale from 1-20. The letters should be sent directly from the referees and weight 30%.

3. A statement of purpose (including areas of interest and potential supervisors) provided by the applicant is graded in a scale from 1-20 and weights 15% of the final score.

4. The merit of the candidate is assessed through the CV. The Curriculum Vitae of each candidate is graded by the AC in a scale from 1-20. Specific points of attention are: publications in peer-reviewed international outlets, study periods in exchange programs, attendance of Summer schools, internships in international institutions, and other relevant professional experience. This criteria weights 15%.

 

Only applicants with an overall grade of (or above) 17.5 will be considered for the fellowship. The fellowship will be awarded to the top five applicants. If the number of applicants with the overall grade of 17.5 is lower than two the AC may decide to open a new call.

All candidates may be shortlisted for individual interviews with the AC (by phone or Skype if needed), to discuss the candidate’s intentions and aspirations, and to check whether there is a suitable match between their academic background and the requirements of the program.

 

  1. PUBLICATION OF RESULTS

The results of the evaluation will be published, for consultation purposes, at Nova SBE.

The applicant has a period of 10 working days after publication of the results to request a preliminary hearing, in agreement with the ‘Código do Procedimento Administrativo’. The final decision can be contested, addressing a letter to the PhD Directive Board, up to 15 working days after the respective notification.

 

  1. FINANCING

The fellowships awarded under this contract will be financed by funds from the Portuguese Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education and from the European Social Fund (as eligible) through the Operational Programs of the 2014-2020 period, specifically the Human Capital Thematic Operational Program, the Regional Operational Program of northern, central, and midsouth Portugal, in accordance with the provisions of any applicable specific regulations.

The award of the scholarships is subject to the receipt of the required documentation and the budgetary availability of the funding entity.
