The Master in Economics, Empirical Applications and Policies is a one year master’s program at The University of the Basque Country in Bilbao (Spain). Our students learn how markets function and excel in analyzing the data these markets generate. We encourage highly motivated and quantitative inclined students to apply for this program. We start from the foundations and build sound knowledge, therefore, you do not need a background in economics.

Our students learn the theoretical, empirical and computational methods that economists use to understand markets and analyze data. Powered with these skills, our students have access to highly qualified jobs. Hence, our Master acts as a link between academia and firms demanding highly skilled human capital, such as consulting firms, think tanks and domestic or international public institutions requiring a solid research component.

Those who opt for a research career will have already acquired the knowledge and skills necessary to begin working independently on their Ph.D. dissertations. This Master is taught in English. We would like to attract bright and strongly motivated students wherever they come from.

Be part of a small group of bright and motivated students that every year turn into well equipped economists. Well regarded and dedicated faculty will help you making the transition from a promising student to a reliable professional. Our master's program is specially designed to build your knowledge and train your skills to the point where you can conduct independent analysis for firms and governments.

At the University of the Basque Country our motto is "eman ta zabal zazu", basque for "create and spread (knowledge)". We firmly believe in equal opportunities. The University of the Basque Country is a public university, which means that the tuition fee students pay is a small fraction of the actual cost of these educational services.

The Basque is a region with an ancient culture, powerful landscape and an income per capita above the European average. If you decide to study with us, we promise you will have an unforgettable experience.

Courses

The academic year is divided in five blocks / periods.

FIRST BLOCK: PRELIMINARIES. A first block reviews preliminary requirements and it is intended to homogenize students’ different backgrounds. This block covers introductory materials in Economics, Econometrics and Mathematics. This block lasts four weeks from early September to early October.

SECOND BLOCK: FUNDAMENTALS. A second block includes courses that form the basic toolkit of an economist. It includes courses in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics and Computational Methods. This block lasts eight weeks and ends before Christmas.

THIRD AND FORTH BLOCKS: FIELD SUBJECTS. The third and fourth blocks include courses in a wide variety of topics among which students make their choice depending on their preferences and curriculum design. The supply of topic courses will vary from year to year depending on students’ preferences and Faculty availability. A potential pool of courses would include: Economic Growth, Labour Economics, Energy Markets, Monetary Markets, Game Theory, Experimental Economics, Environmental Economics, Policy Evaluation, Cultural Economics, Auctions, Social Choice, Natural Resources, and Fiscal Policy. Each of these blocks lasts seven weeks.

FIFTH BLOCK: MASTER THESIS. The purpose is that students implement the skills acquired by writing an essay on a specific subject. Students are expected to show a particular interest in one of the topics. Under the supervision of a Faculty member, the student is required to write an essay containing both theoretical and empirical analysis of a specific economic issue. The Master Thesis must be defended orally in mid July and handed in by late July. View examples of Past Master Theses.
