Scholarships consider special qualifications, such as academic, athletic, or artistic talent, and provide a form of aid that does not have to be repaid. Scholarships and other awards are also available for students pursuing particular fields of study, are interested in entering certain professions, or who are members of groups underrepresented in higher education. Unlike grants, which require demonstrated need, scholarships may be awarded on a "merit" basis instead of on "need," although some also stipulate "need."
Scholarships are a prestigious form of aid because the student awarded a scholarship has met specific criteria stipulated by a donor. Students should consider applying for scholarships, not only for the financial assistance offered, but also for the recognition and standing that accompany receipt of such an award.
There are many scholarship sources: the University, local and regional organizations, and nationwide competitive scholarships. At CSU, Chico, many freshmen arrive with private scholarships from local clubs and businesses. We recommend that high school seniors check out every potential scholarship source for all possible assistance.
