The research group “Development Economics” at the Center for Modern Indian Studies (CeMIS) at the University of Göttingen invites applications for one or more fellowships to pursue a three-year PhD degree beginning in October 2024. The fellowship may be extended for an additional year depending on the progress of the PhD candidate.

The fellowship is open to all candidates with an interest in the topics covered by the research group, including long-run development, global inequality, child health and nutrition, health systems, as well as various methodological approaches, including randomized-controlled trials, quasi-experimental study designs and observational studies. The research group has a regional focus on South Asia, but we also welcome applications with an interest in other world regions.

To be eligible to apply, candidates must have a master’s degree in development economics, global health or any other related field.

Applicants must provide the following materials:
1. A cover sheet with your name, your date of birth and your contact details (email and phone number)
2. A letter of motivation and short description of your research interest of around 1000 words.
3. A Curriculum Vitae
4. Official documentation of
(1) M.A. or M.Sc. certificate
(2) Transcript of records. The transcript must include a description of the grading system that specifies the grade range, from maximum to minimum.

Additional information:
1. We will not be able to provide individual feedback or answer individual queries on applications. You will be informed of the status of your application no later than May 31, 2024.
2. Successful fellows will be required to comply with all rules and regulations pertinent to grantees of the University of Göttingen.
3. The monthly fellowship amount is equivalent to the PhD fellowships of the large German foundations, currently € 1.450 plus a lump sum for research expenses of € 100 per month. Candidates will be reimbursed with up to € 1.075 for their travel expenses to and from Göttingen.
