The global economic order is undergoing profound transformation as geopolitical tensions increasingly reshape international trade, finance, investment, technology, and global governance. After decades of deepening global integration, the world economy is now characterised by growing fragmentation, reflected in the reorganisation of supply chains, the emergence of competing technological ecosystems, the increasing use of sanctions and export controls, and the formation of economic blocs with diverging strategic priorities.
The 6th Global Economic Policy Group Workshop, titled The Economics of Geopolitical Fragmentation, will take place on 25–26 September 2026 at the Goethe Institut, Budapest, Hungary. The workshop is organised by the Global Economic Policy Group in collaboration with the University of Westminster, FernUniversität in Hagen, and the Goethe Institut.
The workshop aims to bring together researchers working on the economic implications of geopolitical fragmentation and related topics in international economics and finance. It welcomes theoretical, empirical, and policy-oriented contributions addressing issues such as geopolitical risk, trade and investment fragmentation, technological decoupling, sanctions and economic statecraft, global supply chains, international monetary and financial system fragmentation, emerging markets, and global economic governance.
Selected papers presented at the workshop will be considered for a special issue of the International Journal of Finance and Economics.
Submissions of extended abstracts or full papers should be sent to k.jackson@westminster.ac.uk by 15 July 2026. There is no fee payable to attend the workshop.
