The ORSTAT research group, Faculty of Economics and Business, KU Leuven (Belgium) has a vacancy for a PhD student position in Data Science. We are looking for a full-time PhD student to do research on the use of statistical and machine learning methods for analyzing and forecasting traffic safety outcomes, under the supervision of prof. Filip Van den Bossche and prof. Christophe Croux.

Project

The PhD candidate will work on the development of advanced statistical and machine learning methods for time series prediction, with applications mainly in the field of traffic safety. In particular, the candidate will investigate and further develop statistical and machine learning methods for modelling and forecasting traffic safety outcomes, and contribute to data collection initiatives in function of advanced data analysis in the broad field of road safety research (with focus on, among others, regions, road types, road user categories and their interactions, assessment of road safety interventions and risk contributing factors…). Specific cases will be selected during the PhD. Results of the research will be communicated in top-level publications, and through presentations at international conferences and, where applicable, for relevant policy makers.

Although the focus is on research, the candidate can be asked to give guidance to Bachelor’s and Master’s students, to be involved in teaching and to supervise and correct exams.

Profile

• You recently obtained your master’s degree (or you are about to graduate in 2026) in Business Engineering, Business and Information Systems Engineering, Statistics and Data Science, Mathematics, (Business) Economics, or a similar degree with an equivalent academic level. 

• You have a strong interest in statistics / data science and its applications.

• Excellent results in prior studies are a requirement (cum laude – distinction, or higher).

• Experience with programming languages (such as R and/or Python) is an asset. 

• You can conduct independent research (demonstrated, e.g., by an excellent Master’s thesis) as well as collaborate well in teams.

• You have excellent command of spoken and written English and are equipped with good communication skills.

• You are willing to participate in (international) seminars and conferences.

• You are willing to enroll in the PhD program of the Faculty of Economics and Business at KU Leuven, which entails 21-ECTS of relevant coursework. 

• You will also give guidance to students, be involved in teaching activities and in the supervision of exams.

• A fulltime PhD position for 1 year, starting 2026, September 15, renewable up to a maximum of four years upon yearly successful evaluations. The work should lead to a PhD degree.
