The IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, in collaboration with the University of Florence, is offering a fully funded PhD fellowship within the Social Sciences for Sustainability and Wellbeing (S3W) program, supported by Regione Toscana (Pegaso framework) and the Dumarey Group. The three-year program, starting on November 1, 2025, in Lucca and Florence, is entirely in English and includes tailored training, guided research with faculty supervision, active participation in academic life, and a 6–12 month study period abroad. Applicants must submit a short research proposal on “Technological neutrality in the automotive sector: socio-economic consequences, environmental resilience, and impact on pollution.” Requirements: Master’s degree (or equivalent), excellent English skills, commitment to rigorous research, and interest in policy-relevant issues. Applications must be submitted online by October 23, 2025  at 12:00 CEST (noon); shortlisted candidates will be interviewed on October 29, 2025.

The IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca is now recruiting one additional PhD fully funded fellowship in the Social Sciences for Sustainability and Wellbeing program,  jointly offered with the University of Florence

The position is funded under the Pegaso international doctoral framework by Regione Toscana and sponsored by the multinational Dumarey Group present in Italy. 

The PhD program in Social Sciences for Sustainability and Wellbeing (acronym: S3W) offers a great opportunity to learn a wide range of methods from the social sciences and enter a community of scholars committed to doing their best to ensure wellbeing and a sustainable future for our society.

Research proposal 

The prospective student will submit a brief research proposal (maximum length two pages) on the topic: "Technological neutrality in the automotive sector: socio-economic consequences, environmental resilience, and impact on pollution"

IMT in a nutshell

The IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca is a public international doctoral school and a center for research and higher education that focuses on the analysis of economic, societal, technological and cultural systems.

Since its foundation in 2005, the School has distinguished itself for the quality and innovativeness of its research and doctoral programs and its interdisciplinary nature, where different methodologies drawn from economics, engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, physics, archaeology, art history and the analysis and management of cultural heritage.

S3W in a nutshell

  • Contract Type: 36 months of scholarship

Your Role

  • First year: Follow courses in your tailor-made scientific training program
  • Second and third years: Engage in your own research under the close guidance of at least one Advisor from the Faculty
  • Develop three or more research papers for your doctoral thesis
  • Participate in the daily academic and campus life, including seminars, conferences, workshops, public outreach activities, etc.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree or equivalent
  • Excellent communication skills in English
  • Devotion to rigorous research, critical thinking, and interest in policy-relevant issues

Important note: Since the PhD program begins on November 1st, it is essential that the scholarship acceptance take place with the utmost promptness by October 31st, and that the student be ready to start with the PhD activities.
