A three-day workshop for economics educators who want to build a scholarship research portfolio but are not sure where to start.

Over three intensive days we will address all of these questions in a practical, supportive, and collegial environment. You will be guided through the full research process — from the initial spark of an idea to an actionable research plan — by a highly experienced team of scholar-practitioners drawn from across the UK.

Scholarship and education research come with their own distinct challenges. How do you design a study around your own classroom? What are the ethical considerations? What research methods are appropriate? How do you get published?

What you will cover:

  •  The scholarship landscape in the UK and beyond — where to publish, how to collaborate, and how to disseminate your work effectively
  • Qualitative research methods: focus groups, questionnaire design, thematic analysis, and mixed-methods approaches
  • Quantitative methods for education research, including a dedicated introduction to Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) — what they are, when to use them, and how they work
  • Ethics for scholarship research
  • How to leverage AI tools to develop research ideas and proposals
  • Interactive sessions where you design and pitch your own project, leaving with a clear plan for your first (or next) piece of scholarship

Who should attend?

This workshop is specifically designed for education-focused staff who are at an early stage of developing their scholarship research profile — whether you are preparing for promotion or simply curious about evaluating your teaching interventions to see if they actually work. No prior research methods experience is required.

  Your instructors:

Caroline Elliott (Warwick) | Fabio Arico (UEA) | Paolo Spada (Southampton) | Jana Sadeh (Southampton) | Alvin Birdi (Bristol)
