The Department of Environmental Science (ENVS) at Aarhus University, Roskilde, Denmark invites applications for a position as Post Doc in Applied Microeconomics, focusing on pressing environmental and developmental issues facing African cities, particularly in waste management and e-waste. The ideal candidate has a strong background in econometrics and applied microeconomics, alongside expertise in environmental and development economics. The position is for two years, starting 15 April, 2025.  The physical workplace will be at the Aarhus University Risø campus in Roskilde (35 km West of Copenhagen).

The position is from 15 april 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is for 2 years.

 

Job description

The appointed researcher will contribute to a project examining the environmental impacts and developmental challenges related to e-waste in African urban settings. The research will employ advanced econometric methods to analyze survey data and satellite images, generating insights into waste management practices, policy effectiveness, and the broader institutional and developmental implications of e-waste.

The candidate is expected to contribute to this project, including:   

  • Conduct econometric analysis on e-waste and waste management in African cities.
  • Work with satellite imagery and survey data specific to African contexts.
  • Collaborate on disciplinary and interdisciplinary research addressing both environmental and economic aspects of development in urban Africa.
  • Contribute to publications and presentations that will reach academic and policy-oriented audiences.
  • Communicate findings to local stakeholders in relevant African countries.

 

Your profile

The ideal candidate holds a PhD degree in Economics (completed or near completion) specializing in Applied Microeconomics, Environmental Economics, or Development Economics, or similar. 

Moreover, the candidate has:

  • Strong econometrics skills and experience with applied economic research.
  • Proficiency in working with satellite images and survey data.
  • Demonstrated interest in the developmental and institutional challenges facing African cities, particularly waste management issues.
  • Proficiency in English, written and spoken.
  • Excellent communication skills for both academic and policy audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to publish in international journals.
  • Ability to develop and implement policy-oriented research ideas.
  • Ability to cooperate with others in an international team.
  • Ability to manage own research activities and meet deadlines.

 

Who we are

The Department of Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary department under the Faculty of Technical Sciences at Aarhus University. The expertise ranges from physics, chemistry, microbiology and mathematical modelling to social science, geography, economics and policy analysis. Both basic and applied research is conducted related to some of the major challenges facing society, such as pollution and pollution control mechanisms, land management, soil, water, air and biodiversity, protection of ecosystem services, climate change, and energy systems. Advisory services within these areas are offered to ministries and other stakeholders. Currently, about 170 staff and PhD-students are working at the department. The selected candidate will be affiliated with the Environmental Social Science and Geography research unit. The unit employs approximately 25 staff, focusing on interdisciplinary analysis of the interlinkages between the environment and society from political science, economics and sociology perspectives. The strategic foci of the unit include environmental policy development, regulation and instruments, understanding of actions and actors in policy formulation and implementation, spatially integrated modelling as well as policies and economics of ecosystem services. Research findings are used for dissemination to the research community, in advisory services to decision makers as well as for teaching.

Deadline

This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. Formalities and salary range

Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
