The chair of environmental and resource economics at the institute for economics of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel is looking for
a postdoctoral researcher (m/f/d)
from February 1st 2026 or later, initially for 3 years with a 3-year extension after internal evaluation. The salary is based on the German public pay scale (TV-L 14) according to previous experiences with a weekly workload corresponding to a full-time position with 38.7 hours. Part-time employment is possible.

You should have:
- PhD in economics (close to completing to be finished by the time of employment) with experience in environmental, resource or climate change economics, game theory and/or theory of optimal taxation; alternatively a PhD in related fields such as mathematics and physics with a background in economic modeling;
- a record in analytical and/or numerical modeling and/or empirical methods;
- publication track-record in renowned peer-reviewed international journals;
- teaching experience and previous acquisition of third-party funding is an advantage;
- very good command of English, both written and spoken (comparable to C1, a formal proof is not necessary)
- good knowledge of German (B2 level) is an asset
The successful candidate will be located at Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel, joining the chair of environmental and resource economics at the institute for economics, and work with Ulrike Kornek. The chair’s research focuses on climate change economics, policy instrument and institution modeling as well as applying game theory to understand incentives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The methods include analytical and numerical integrated assessment modeling as well as empirical data analysis. The chair will conduct collaborative research with scholars from national and international institutes, e.g. the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Paris School of Economics and ETH Zurich. At the chair you can conduct independent research in environmental and resource economics. You will profit from the strong research activities at Kiel’s institutes as well as the international network of the chair, with the possibility for research stays. In addition you can teach, develop and implement classes and seminars. Application of third-party funding and the supervision of bachelor- and master students are desirable. The preparation of a habilitation is possible. Research topics such as the following are ideal, but the position is not limited to these areas: climate policy instrument and institution design; incentives for global public good provision; inequality, redistribution and the environment; climate change governance. Ideal tools are analytical and/or numerical modeling and/or empirical methods within: cost-benefit analysis; game theory; optimal taxation; integrated assessment modeling; agent-based modeling; policy instrument analysis.
