John N. Friedman has been named as the inaugural dean of Brown University's Thomas J. Watson Jr. School of International and Public Affairs. 

The school, set to launch on July 1, 2025, will focus on critical issues such as social mobility, education, policymaking, and other pressing matters. The new school will incorporate various research centers and initiatives, to approach global issues from diverse perspectives. Supported by a generous gift from Mary and Jerome Vascellaro, the Vascellaro Family Dean of International and Public Affairs position will ensure the school's prominence in preparing future leaders in global policymaking. 

Friedman, a distinguished economist and public affairs scholar, has been a faculty member at Brown since 2015.  He earned his Bachelor's degree and PhD from Harvard, and has worked as special advisor to the President on the National Economic Council from 2013 to 2014 and was an assistant professor of public policy at Harvard University’s Kennedy School from 2009 to 2014. He is also a co-editor of the American Economic Review.

With his background in economic research and public service, Friedman's leadership will be expected to enhance the school's profile and impact at a time when nuanced scholarship is crucial. 

The establishment of the Watson School follows years of planning to enhance Brown's expertise in international affairs, providing opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to engage in policy-related activities. Friedman's appointment aims to foster a collaborative community of scholars and practitioners, advancing the mission to address the complex challenges of today's world.
