OPEN

The Department of Economics at Ghent University is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join an FWO-funded research project in theoretical macroeconometrics, under the supervision of Prof. Gerdie Everaert. The project studies the bias, consistency, and inference properties of local projection methods for estimating impulse responses in time series and panel data settings.

Topic

The project is situated at the intersection of macroeconometrics and time series analysis and focuses on the statistical properties of local projection methods for estimating impulse responses.

Impulse response analysis plays a central role in modern macroeconomics, yet widely used estimation methods face important challenges in finite samples and in environments with highly persistent or non-stationary data. This PhD project studies the bias, consistency, and inference properties of local projection estimators in both time series and panel data settings. The research will contribute to the development of bias-corrected estimators and robust inference procedures, with the goal of strengthening the theoretical foundations of impulse response analysis in applied macroeconomics.

Role and responsibilities

The successful candidate will carry out independent, high-level research within this project, in close interaction with the promoter and international collaborators. Your main tasks include:

  • Conducting a thorough review of the theoretical and empirical literature in macroeconometrics and time series analysis.
  • Developing analytical results on the asymptotic and finite-sample properties of local projection estimators.
  • Designing and implementing Monte Carlo simulations to assess estimator performance.
  • Writing high-quality academic papers for submission to leading international journals.
  • Presenting research results at international conferences and workshops.

In addition to research activities, the PhD student may be involved in limited educational support activities, for example assisting with specific course-related activities or co-supervision of bachelor's or master's theses related to the project, in accordance with the regulations for doctoral fellows.

Job profile

We are looking for a highly motivated and analytically strong candidate with the following qualifications:

  • You have (or will obtain shortly) a European master's degree in Economics, Econometrics, or a closely related field.
  • You have a strong background in econometrics and macroeconomics.
  • You have a pronounced interest in theoretical and methodological research.
  • You are comfortable with mathematical derivations and quantitative analysis.
  • Experience with numerical simulations and programming (e.g. MATLAB, R, or Python) is an asset.
  • You are able to work independently and have strong communication skills.
  • You are fluent in English, both written and spoken.

Our offer

We offer a full-time position as a doctoral fellow, consisting of an initial appointment of 12 months, which—after a positive evaluation—will be extended to a total maximum of 48 months.

The doctoral fellowship amounts to 100% of the net salary of an AAP member in equal family circumstances, in accordance with the Ghent University salary scales (approx. 2,650–3,000 EUR net/month). A fellowship that meets the conditions of the doctoral fellowship regulations is exempt from personal income tax. In addition to the monthly stipend, fellows receive a holiday bonus (paid in June) and a year-end bonus (13th month), both in line with Ghent University's AAP salary scales.

All Ghent University staff members enjoy a comprehensive benefits package, including extensive training and career development opportunities, 36 days of annual leave for a full-time position (supplemented by fixed bridge days), a bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.

The position offers the opportunity to conduct research in an international and intellectually stimulating academic environment at the Department of Economics in Ghent.

Ghent University consistently ranks among the top universities worldwide. Ghent is a vibrant and welcoming city in the heart of Europe, offering a high quality of life and a rich cultural scene.
