In April 2021, TU Delft launched an extensive Climate Action Programme, focusing not only on additional investments in research and education but also improving the sustainability of the TU Delft campus. For the next ten years TU Delft will allocate 22 million euro to set up and further shape this extensive programme. The TU Delft vision on Climate Action is deeply founded in preceding decades of university wide climate action research. The goal of the Climate Action research programme is to build on current strengths and identify the areas where there is a need to strengthen our capacities to keep up our (inter)national reputation as climate action university.
Climate Resilient Infrastructure Finance
Climate finance is at the heart of many climate change policy proposals such as the Glasgow Climate Part, Paris agreement, the obligatory disclosure of climate risks for governments and companies, etc. It is about mobilizing financial resources aimed at stimulating adaptation to and mitigation of climate risks. Climate change and finance impact all infrastructure decisions, including clean energy investments, green mobility, phasing out fossil fuel systems, climate-resilience of existing and new urban development, and climate-proofing infrastructure investments in general. Yet, little is known about how finance shapes the evolution of infrastructures and resilient urban systems.
We welcome an Assistant Professor who will use data-driven approaches to understand how climate finance shapes the evolution of regional and urban infrastructure and networks, their vulnerability and exposure to climate risks. From there, climate finance instruments can be designed to efficiently and effectively achieve resilience to climate change across different countries, regions and infrastructures. Based on this analysis, you will unpack trade-offs and choices that need to be made in climate finance policies. By blending climate finance data with data on infrastructure and urban evolution and resilience, new data driven methods will be developed to determine how climate finance shapes the growth and resilience of infrastructure networks, cities and regions. This will ensure that the tremendous investments in climate adaptation and mitigation are used in the most efficient and effective way.
As a tenure tracker, you will inspire colleagues and students through research and education, both in courses (existing and to be developed) and project-oriented education. You are expected to acquire funding for new research projects from different national and international funding schemes and contribute to organizational tasks and valorization of your work.
- You have a PhD degree in Quantitative Economics, Econometrics, Statistics or Data Analytics with a focus on Climate and Finance;
- You have a track record demonstrating experience in working with micro- and macro data and models in the context of climate finance and impact investment; as well as experience with data-based (resilience) assessment for infrastructure or cities;
- You are curious and driven to develop novel data driven methods to connect infrastructure and financial data, and you are eager to explore the normative questions around the challenging trade-offs around responsible investments;
- Domain knowledge in the field of climate policy is an asset;
- You thrive in a multidisciplinary team, and you enjoy building bridges between infrastructure & engineering and climate finance
- You are an excellent networker with great collaboration and communication skills, including a proven record of publications.
Conditions of employment
A tenure-track position is offered for six years. In the fifth year we’ll decide if you will be offered a permanent faculty position, based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment. We expect that you have the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future. If you currently are an Assistant Professor, we also accept your application for this role as an Associate Professor.
Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme.
TU Delft sets high standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. The TU Delft offers training to improve English competency. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer courses to learn the Dutch language within three years.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (salary indication for assistant professor: € 3.807 - € 5.922).
