Main Text:

The MSc Economics and the MSc Quantitative Economics for Sustainability at Leipzig University are research-oriented master’s programs that offer rigorous training in economics (microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics), with a strong emphasis on analytical, quantitative and evidence-based approaches.

The MSc Economics prepares students to analyse economic relationships in a profound manner, assess data using statistical software such as R or Stata, and develop scientifically grounded solutions to complex economic problems. Modules include, for example, Advanced Public Economics, Applied Topics in Monetary Economics or Time Series Analysis for Macroeconomics and Finance. Students have the option to specialise in Economic Policy or Quantitative Economics, allowing them either to deepen their understanding of applied economic policy or to build strong expertise in empirical and quantitative methods.

The MSc Quantitative Economics for Sustainability (QuESt) explores pathways for the sustainability transition of the economy by means of quantitative economic methods. The major sustainability challenges are analyzed in modules such as Climate Economics, Biodiversity Economics, Environmental Economics, and Institutional Economics of Sustainability Transitions. Methodological skills include data-driven approaches of econometrics and statistics as well as economic and integrated economic-climate and ecological-economic modeling. QuESt offers interdisciplinary interfaces, with optional modules from climate and biodiversity science.

What we offer

The two study programs have an international and research-oriented profile. Each of the master’s programmes can be studied entirely in English, includes the option of a semester abroad, and offers further international opportunities such as study options at Keio University in Tokyo or a double degree with UniversitĂ© Paris 1 PanthĂ©on-Sorbonne for highly qualified students. In addition, students may complete a research internship in which they work on their own research project under the supervision of a professor and a research institute.

Career prospects

Graduates are well prepared for careers in the private sector such as banks or business consulting agencies, public administration including ministries and central banks, research institutions, and international organisations or NGOs. Depending on their chosen specialisation, the programme also provides a strong basis for doctoral study and an academic career.

Our department

The Economics (VWL) group of the Faculty of Economics and Management Science provides a great research environment focusing on policy-relevant research questions in the fields of macro- and microeconomics, statistics and econometrics, environmental economics, public finances as well as money, credit and banking. We are a young and research-oriented department and have the objective of training students in state-of-the-art empirical methods and stimulating discussion about current topics related to economic policy. We value the link between theory and empiry as well as the transfer of research to policymakers and the broader public.
