The PhD in Quantitative Methods in Economics (QME) - entirely in English - provides excellent skills in the use of the most modern quantitative tools for economic analysis and economic policy analysis, used both in academia and in the private sector, as well as in the analytical activities of national and international institutions.

Course Objectives

The aim is to develop scientific training in quantitative analysis for the new generation of scholars in academia and to promote a culture of quantitative analysis within institutions. The course delves into policy analysis tools, both ex-ante (calibrated predictive models) and ex-post (counterfactual analysis of observational data); mathematical and statistical quantitative methods in deterministic and stochastic contexts applied to economic growth, income distribution, monetary policy, international trade, environmental economics, social inclusiveness, business economics, and other areas of economic analysis application. These topics are also explored through simulation models such as multisectoral models (input-output, SAM based, and CGE) and agent-based models. Significant attention is also paid to new methods of online data collection and analysis (big data, web scraping, and nowcasting), network analysis, and data analysis applied to administrative business data.

Employment and Professional Opportunities

QME PhD graduates will be able to access professions requiring high qualifications in data analysis, the construction and maintenance of quantitative survey models, and policy evaluation at both micro and macroeconomic levels. More specifically, the QME PhD facilitates access to academic careers in national and international university systems; work in economic research centers at the national and international level; activities supporting the choice and implementation of economic policies at all levels of government; roles in policy impact evaluation, both ex-ante and ex-post, in public and private companies; and professions related to the roles of economist and applied statistician or emerging roles such as data scientist, data analyst, or data journalist. In particular, the focus on training public officials in data analysis aims to contribute to technical competence in public administration. Similarly, the application of quantitative methodologies to business administrative data and fields such as business analytics offers a professional outlet in companies that prioritize the use of data analysis in strategic decision-making.
