The University of New Mexico (UNM) in Albuquerque, NM, USA welcomes domestic and international students to apply for our funded Ph.D. program in Economics for Fall 2026.
Program
UNM’s Ph.D. in Economics is designed for students interested in pursuing original applied research and advanced study in Economics. We have renowned faculty, significant graduate student financial support, and a history of strong graduate student placements. The UNM Economics Department is ranked in the top 25% in the world according to RePEc.
Students receive five years of guaranteed funding (including a stipend, full health insurance, and full tuition). Funding may be provided through assistantships and scholarships. Assistantships include classroom support, research, and teaching undergraduate courses. Summer money is available and the Department and University sponsor travel awards for research conferences.

Requirements
- BA/BS in Economics, Applied Economics, Agricultural Economics, or related fields. MA/MS in Economics (or related field) is NOT required for admission.
- Letter of Intent: Your letter of intent should clearly address how your interests match those of the department. Please refer to the departmental website for specific guidelines for writing your letter of intent.
- CV/Resume
- Test Scores: GRE scores are required to be submitted with your application. Must be from within the last three (3) years.
- Undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) transcripts are required. Unofficial copies are acceptable for your application.
- English test scores (required for all International Applicants).
- Three (3) letters of recommendation.
