Giandomenico Scarpelli graduated cum laude in Economics in 1981 and, in 1985, obtained a post-graduate diploma in banking at the University of Rome.
For many years he worked for the Bank of Italy, where he dealt above all with the issuance of government securities, the Eurosystem monetary policy operations and the payment system issues.
From 2019 to 2021 he was the head of the Payment System Directorate of the Bank of Italy.
He was member of international groups and committees set up at the OECD and ECB.
He has published, inter alia, an essay on the public debt management in Italy and a book on economics and finance in masterpieces of literature.
He has always been interested in questions concerning the economy in relation to the environment and after his retirement he is investigating more deeply these issues.
