The PhD program in Economics at Drexel University is designed to prepare students to become outstanding research scholars in academia, research and policy-oriented institutions, and the corporate sector. A distinctive strength of the program is its exceptionally low student-to-faculty ratio, which allows for highly personalized mentoring and frequent interaction with faculty throughout all stages of the PhD.

Our faculty are accomplished researchers in their areas and have published in top academic journals such as American Economic Review, Review of Economic Studies, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Monetary Economics, American Economic Journal: Microeconomics, Journal of Economic Theory, Journal of International Economics and many others. The atmosphere of the program is collegial. Students are encouraged to co-author research papers with faculty members, other students, and alumni. As a result, our PhD students frequently produce quality academic publications before graduating from the program.

Curriculum

All PhD students pursue a common set of core economics courses during their first year of study. This core consists of course work in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. These courses provide the necessary training for conducting research in economics at an advanced level. After their first year, students choose two fields from among three fields of specialization: industrial organization, macroeconomics, and international trade. Each of these fields offers a comprehensive experience which blends theory and applications.

Funding and Resources

Students receive financial support for five years, which covers both tuition fees, health insurance, and a stipend to sustain their academic pursuits. Additionally, funding is accessible to facilitate their participation in conferences, including travel expenses. Furthermore, students benefit from permanent office space and their own desktop computers.

Placements

Recent graduates have been placed/are currently working at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland (research economist), the University of Richmond (tenure-track), the University of Pennsylvania (post-doc), the U.S. Bureau of Economics Analysis (research economist), SC Johnson College of Business at Cornell University, Rice University, Penn State Main Campus, TIAA-CREF (economist), Amazon (economist), the Brattle Group, Charles River Associates, and Bates White Economic Consulting.
