Professor Alessia Russo
The Department of Economics and Management at the University of Padua invites expressions of interest for a fixed-term postdoctoral position funded by the ERC Consolidator Grant RESTATE – REthinking the Welfare STATE under Political Constraints in a Changing World (Grant Agreement No. 101232064), led by Professor Alessia Russo. RESTATE studies the design and sustainability of the welfare state when political constraints limit government commitment and economies face demographic change. It combines dynamic theory, quantitative heterogeneous-agent models, and computational methods to study public debt, social insurance, intergenerational redistribution, and growth-enhancing policies.
The appointment is for up to four years. The preferred starting date is September 2027, with flexibility for an earlier or later start. The position is full-time and research-only, with no teaching obligations, and offers substantial research support, including funding for data acquisition or creation. The successful candidate will be encouraged to pursue their own research agenda and collaborate within the RESTATE network.
We seek candidates with strong research potential and interests aligned with RESTATE, particularly in macroeconomics, public finance, political economy, or related fields. Expertise in dynamic contracting, limited commitment, quantitative macroeconomics or computational methods is especially welcome.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Economics or a related field by the starting date. The contractual arrangement will depend on the candidate’s profile and eligibility under University of Padua regulations. The working language is English; knowledge of Italian is not required. We are committed to diversity and inclusion and strongly encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds. Compensation is competitive with that offered by comparable European research institutions. Researchers relocating to Italy may also qualify for favorable tax treatment under current Italian legislation.
The Department offers an active international research environment with regular seminars and workshops and a PhD programme in Economics and Management. It is located in Padua’s historic city center, in a lively university city with a large international community.
Applications should be submitted via EconJobMarket by November 30, 2026, and must include:
a. A cover letter;
b. A curriculum vitae;
c. A job market paper;
d. A research proposal;
e. Two letters of recommendation.
Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed virtually in December 2026 through the European Economic Association Job Market interview platform.
