Antonio Aranibar of Bolivia has been appointed by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Equatorial Guinea, effective March 16, 2025, with the host Government’s approval. Aranibar takes over from Anna M. Pont, who, from 2022 to 2024, led the UN's program to implement the UN's Sustainable Development Goals in Equatorial Guinea.
With over 20 years of experience in sustainable development, governance, and peacebuilding, Aranibar previously served in various roles. Most recently he was the UN Special Advisor in Venezuela (until 2024) and between 2016 and 2018 he was Head of Office for the UN Verification Mission in Colombia, where he was involved in the peace process between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). He has also worked as a researcher and director for projects focusing on conflict prevention, dialogue promotion, and institutional reform in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Aranibar holds a master's degree in econometrics from the Autonomous University of Madrid and a bachelor's degree in economic development from the University of Paris IX-Dauphine.
The Resident Coordinator is the highest-ranking UN representative at the country level, reporting directly to the UN Secretary General. Resident Coordinators lead UN Country Teams and coordinate UN support to countries in implementing the 2030 Agenda. They represent the UN to engage with governments, civil society, and other partners to address the country's needs and priorities to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, while also promoting UN values, coordinating operational activities, and managing the local UN team.
