Discover Politics at the University of Surrey
The Department of Politics at the University of Surrey is home to a lively community of energetic minds examining how power operates and how it affects the people it touches. Within The department we offer two MSc programmes and one PhD programme.
The Department of Politics has always placed learning and teaching at the centre of its work. We seek to help students develop their own understanding of the world and the tools with which to express that. Given the very wide range of careers that students have gone on to, we recognise that it is not enough to ask for knowledge, but rather understanding and engagement have to lead the way. This means a focus on active learning, where students take the initiative in finding answers to their questions, and on skills development, be that for research, presentation or self-reflection.
At postgraduate taught level, politics builds on the diverse experiences of students to give them the specialist knowledge and skills that they will need for their future career choices. With a strong emphasis on student-led sessions, modules probe deep into their particular field, as connecting together to provide a solid base for the final dissertation, where students can demonstrate their abilities in an extended piece of research, or a research-focused work placement, in which students develop a policy-relevant research project within a government or non-governmental institutions.
Our academics are all research-active, and the teaching you will receive on our courses reflects those interests, helping to make your work all the more engaged and relevant to current issues and debates.
The Department has a very active student body, which organises many academic and social events outside the formal course. With students coming from all over the world, this is an excellent opportunity to meet and challenge each other’s ideas and perceptions.
Our postgraduate fees are payable for each academic year, or each stage of your programme. Students are liable to pay revised fees annually for the duration of the programme.
On certain masters’ programmes, you may need to pay for special equipment, field courses or study periods overseas, in addition to your fees. Details of these expenses may be obtained from the appropriate faculty or department.
We also have a number of scholarships available to postgraduate students.
