The Ruhr Graduate School in Economics (RGS Econ) is a joint initiative of TU Dortmund University, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, the University of Duisburg-Essen and the RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research, providing structured PhD education in Economics in the heart of the Ruhr Valley Region of Germany.
By leveraging the academic expertise, research networks, and data analysis resources of three large economics departments and one of Germany's leading economics research institutes, RGS Econ's doctoral program can effectively:
- deliver state-of-the-art PhD level education in the core areas of economics and promote students' research-targeted specialization via elective courses covering many frontier research questions and methods.
- provide excellent and manifold research and dissertation opportunities in most areas of economics, especially but not exclusively at the highly productive point-of-contact between academic and policy-oriented research.
- support students in building their own research networks, through a wide range of invited research seminar series, workshops, conferences, travel funding and guest research stays offered at the participating institutions or directly by RGS Econ.
RGS Econ places emphasis on a collaborative research and learning environment and structured, but individualized guidance and support for its students. The quality of the program and of its students' dissertations and research contributions allow graduates to obtain distinguished positions in academia as well as public and private institutions. In order to attract students based solely on merit and ability, RGS Econ charges no tuition fees and provides scholarships or other forms of financial assistance to its students.
Next to its PhD program, RGS Econ annually organizes a prominent, refereed Doctoral Conference in Economics and numerous other workshops and events both for its students, faculty and external researchers.
