The University of Amsterdam (UvA) can trace its roots to 1632, when the
institution was first developed to educate students in philosophy and ideas
of trade. Today UvA is one of the most comprehensive universities in all
of Europe, with over 30,000 students and more than 5,00 staff.
Teaching and research are carried out in seven faculties, such as the
Faculties of Humanities, Law, Science, and Economics and Business. Doctoral
programs at UvA are internationally recognized for its excellence and unique
forms of engaging its students. Furthermore, the university is a member of
the League of European Research Universities.
