The Urban Institute was established in 1968 by President Johnson as a
commission of civic leaders interested in social and economic policy
research. The Urban Institute collects information, creates social
programs, and educates the American public on important domestic issues. The
institute has more than 200 ongoing projects every year, as well as
initiatives in over 20 countries around the globe.Â
