Launched in 1975, the Ph.D. Programme at CDS offers registration under the Jawaharlal Nehru University. The Centre is also a recognised research centre of the University of Kerala for its doctoral programme.

The PhD Course Structure:
- PhD course work duration is of twelve (12) months.
- The coursework will consist of fourteen (14) credits and ten (10) courses.

A student has to qualify (non-F grade) in each of the compulsory courses and the grade obtained would be used for final SGPA calculations. On the average, a minimum grade equivalent to 55% of marks has to be obtained by the student in order to be eligible to continue in the programme.
Students will have monthly meetings with coordinators in Semester I to discuss prospective thesis topics. By the end of Semester I, coordinators will set up a Research Advisory Committee (RAC) for each student.
Additionally, if a PhD student wishes or their prospective supervisor(s) or RAC members suggest opting for any one or more than one MA courses of any semester, then students can go for it. However, this will not carry any credit.
PhD Internship Abroad Programme (PIA)
To bring about more international exposure to research students, the PhD Internship Abroad (PIA) programme was launched in 2016-17. This enables PhD scholars to spend time in research work at an institute of repute in any part of the world.
