The Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science has awarded extra resources to Schools of Law in the Netherlands. The underlying plan – the Law Sector Plan – will be implemented in cooperation between all law faculties. Utrecht University’s School of Law is involved in two themes: Institutions for Conflict Resolution and Empirical Legal Studies.
The focus of the first theme lies on the role and development of institutions for conflict resolution in a changing society based on the rule of law. It focuses on compensatory systems and law enforcement. The second theme focuses on empirical research into the operation of institutions in legal practice, and obtaining insights as to the performance of duties, transparency, responsibility and liability. To implement these plans a new research cluster has been established in which the two themes are intertwined: Empirical Legal Research into Conflict Resolution Institutions (ERI). ERI consists of a young, enthusiastic group of researchers and aims to pioneer in developing innovative (empirical) legal research (and teaching). It brings together different legal and empirical researchers of the School of Law and other faculties and cooperates with other disciplines, the other law faculties in the Netherlands, and internationally.
We are looking for an Associate Professor (0.5 - 1.0 FTE) who can focus on the interplay between empirical research and institutions for conflict resolution. The position is a tenure track position towards a (part-time) full professorship in the field of empirical research into conflict resolution institutions. The specifics of the position will be aligned in accordance with the specific experience of the candidate. We expect that professorship is possible within three years. Therefore, the candidate should have a strong research profile and a clear vision on academic teaching.
The Associate Professor will act as part of the leadership team of the ERI-cluster, alongside Prof Kees van den Bos and Dr Rianka Rijnhout. Leadership capabilities and a focus on fostering team-spirit and collaboration are very important in fulfilling the position. Preferably, the legal and empirical expertise of the Associate Professor complements those of the other members of the leadership team. - you are able to connect researchers and different research domains;
- you are able to foster and further collaboration within existing and new networks in the field of Empirical Legal Studies (research and education) and preferably also in Institutions for Conflict Resolution, including on an international level;
- you are able to develop an innovative line of research, leading to (international) publications in the field of empirical research into conflict resolution institutions, a discerning eye for opportunities for external research funding and a strong profile in connecting research to society;
- you are able to create and follow-through on innovation in education in the field of Empirical Legal Research (Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, and PhD-level education) and to be visible in teaching.
In light of these tasks we are looking for someone with the following profile:
- a (legal) academic who operates at the intersection of empirical research and institutions of conflict resolution. Preferably, the academic has experience in both (advanced) empirical research methods and with the topic of institutions of conflict resolution. In addition, the candidate ideally has a public-law focused research-publications track record. The ideal candidate complements the current team, in terms of both methodological expertise and legal background;
- a (legal) academic with a strong and appealing vision on empirical legal education and experience in supervising empirical research;
- an academic who is able to inspire others, who has the drive to actively cooperate with Sector Plan partner universities, and who contributes to cooperation with interdisciplinary research groups at Utrecht University (e.g. the Institutions for Open Societies Strategic Theme) and with other stakeholders;
- an academic who is a team-player, and who has shown leadership-capabilities, preferably by leadership of an educational and/or research programme;
- an academic with strong networking skills, preferably also at an international level;
- an academic with excellent writing and speaking skills in English and at least a working knowledge of the Dutch language, suitable to the leadership position.
We offer a temporary position (0.5 - 1.0 FTE) for three years in an international working environment, extending the employment is one of the possibilities. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranges between €5,039 and €6,738 (scale 13-14 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.
