Expression of Interest for the Position of Director General of Economy at the Bank of Spain, May 2025
 

The Directorate General of Economics monitors, analyzes, models, and forecasts economic developments and policies; and prepares analytical studies, reports, policy positions, and external communication on these issues. In particular, the Directorate
General is responsible for different issues:
Analyze, prepare and offer advice on monetary policy to the Governor as a member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB).
Prepare the medium-term macroeconomic projections for the Spanish economy.
Undertake studies and research relating to Spanish, European and international economic and financial issues.
Draft the Annual Report and other reports and publications in the areas within its remit. 
As head of Economy, you will be responsible for the following tasks:
Shape overall strategy, policies, and analytical framework of the Directorate General.
Develop innovative approaches to ensure flexibility and contribute with timely and tailored economic analysis in an ever changing, uncertain and volatile environment.
Ensure that the Directorate General is at the forefront of economic thinking and analytical tools, making valuable contributions to monetary policy in the euro area.
Represent the Directorate General and the Bank of Spain by participating in and/or chairing a wide range of internal and external committees, working groups, or high- level fora and be the alternate of the Governor in monetary policy meetings at the ECB.
Lead, together with the Deputy Director General, the management of the Directorate, including medium-term business planning, resource allocation, and regularly reviewing the progress of work.
Ensure effective cooperation among the Directorate General’s departments and with other directors at the Bank of Spain.
Contribute, as a member of the Bank of Spain senior management, to the development of the strategic plan.

Profile required
Experience
 Extensive professional experience of at least 20 years of research or managerial roles, with a minimum of ten managerial, dealing with economic research, monetary analysis, and policy-oriented studies, preferably at a central banking, European, or international institutions.
 Experience in interacting with or being part of national and international reference organizations for the functions of the Directorate General.
 Good knowledge of the national, European and international economic, monetary and financial framework.
 Ability to bridge the latest theoretical approaches to applied analysis and tailored policy advice in monetary policy. Desired experience
 A PhD and/or publications record in a field of direct relevance to the Directorate General Influence capacity and comunication skills.
 Ability to communicate and influence in relevant international and national discussion and forums for decision-making in matters affecting this Directorate General.
 Ability to communicate clearly in different forums, as well as in institutional representation and in relations with citizens and the media, with the capacity to convey complex ideas effectively to diverse audiences.
 Good level of spoken and written Spanish is, therefore, a requirement for this position Leadership and multidisciplinarity.
 Extensive experience in leading and managing teams of highly qualified staff. Ability to inspire, empower, and motivate team as well as promote their professional development, and achieve their involvement to achieve excellent analysis and contributions.
 Strategic vision of economic, monetary and financial trends.
 Ability to work transversally and multidisciplinary, considering the interaction of economic, financial markets and financial stability factors.
 High intellectual flexibility, and openness, enabling effective navigation of complex and uncertain international environments.
 A creative and solutions-oriented mindset, with the capacity to innovate and adapt to emerging challenges and multidimensional analysis.

 General Directors of the Bank of Spain are governed by the provisions of Law 13/1994, of June 1, on the Autonomy of the Bank of Spain and the Internal Regulations of the Bank of Spain, and are also subject to Law 3/2015, of March 30, regulating the exercise of high office of the General State Administration, in what is not provided for in the specific regulations. Their appointment corresponds to the Executive Commission at the proposal of the Governor, and must be ratified by the Governing Council 20. Confidentiality and Protection of Personal Data
