Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University (HBMSU), located in Dubai, UAE, the first accredited smart learning university in the region, is seeking exceptional scholars who are passionate about advancing innovative online education. To complement the existing faculty of the School of Sustainability and Green Economy, this non-resident appointment specifically targets scholars whose primary expertise is in sustainable finance, ESG, carbon management, climate policy, or environmental economics. Successful candidates will join a dynamic, learner-centric institution dedicated to excellence in smart learning.
Faculty are expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in a fully online environment, contribute to the development of engaging digital course content, and maintain an active record of research and scholarly contributions in their specific field. The ideal candidates will demonstrate a commitment to research output including high-quality publications, innovative online pedagogy, and meaningful service to the academic community.
Non-resident faculty appointments are full-time roles that allow candidates to teach, conduct research, and engage in service remotely from outside the UAE while fully participating in HBMSU’s online learning environment, contributing to academic service, and mentoring students.
These faculty members reside outside the UAE and contribute to our mission entirely through digital platforms. Teaching is delivered fully online, whether asynchronous or synchronous; allowing them to engage with learners across borders. Non-resident faculty actively participate in faculty meetings, committees, and training sessions virtually, ensuring strong collaboration despite the distance. They are expected to produce impactful research in their specific areas, mentor students, and contribute to academic service, with all responsibilities carried out remotely. Community involvement is fostered through regular virtual participation in campus events and initiatives, enabling them to remain an integral part of HBMSU’s vibrant academic network while working from abroad.

Candidates must hold a completed terminal degree at the time of application; conferral letters or equivalent official verification are required.

Main roles & responsibilities
The successful candidate will play a vital role within the School of Sustainability and Green Economy, complementing the school’s existing expertise in environmental management, waste and water sustainability, energy transitions, and circular-economy/data-driven innovation by leading teaching and research in sustainability finance, ESG, carbon management, and climate policy.

Teaching:
Deliver online courses that foster expertise in sustainable finance, ESG and sustainability reporting (GRI, IFRS S1/S2, TCFD, SASB), carbon management and accounting (GHG Protocol, ISO 14064), climate finance, environmental and ecological economics, climate policy and governance, green entrepreneurship, and sustainable business models. Engage learners in developing analytical skills to evaluate the financial, environmental, social, and governance impacts of corporate and policy decisions, and promote entrepreneurial approaches to sustainability solutions. Use interdisciplinary teaching methods and cutting-edge online platforms to equip students with the knowledge and leadership skills needed to tackle global sustainability challenges, climate change, and the low-carbon economy transition.
Curriculum Development:
Design instructional materials and e-content tailored to sustainable finance, ESG, carbon management, and climate policy, and develop and implement innovative curricula that integrate industry best practices, international sustainability standards and disclosure frameworks, and emerging technologies such as AI and machine learning applied to ESG analytics and climate-risk modelling.
Research:
Enhance the academic landscape by publishing research findings in high-quality, peer-reviewed Scopus/Web-of-Science indexed journals. Conduct impactful research in areas such as sustainable finance, ESG investing, climate finance, carbon markets and pricing, net-zero pathways, sustainability disclosure and reporting, climate-risk assessment, and the economics of the energy transition. Develop proposals and pursue funding opportunities for research.
Mentorship:
Guide, advise, and mentor learners throughout their academic journeys, including supervising MSc and (where applicable) PhD theses in sustainable finance, ESG, and carbon management.
Professional Development:
Create and facilitate professional short courses and workshops aimed at specific target groups and professional communities, including ESG officers, sustainability/CSR managers, and corporate finance professionals in the UAE and the wider GCC region.
Service:
Undertake necessary responsibilities to support academic programs and their accreditations, conduct feasibility studies, perform business analytics, and carry out benchmarking analyses.
Required qualification & skills
Qualifications:
Candidates should possess the following qualifications and skills:
- A PhD in Sustainable Finance, Environmental Economics, Climate Policy, Carbon Management, ESG/Sustainability Accounting, or a closely related field from an accredited university, preferably top ranked universities.
- Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas: (i) sustainable finance, ESG investing, or climate finance; (ii) carbon management, carbon accounting, or net-zero/decarbonisation pathways; (iii) sustainability reporting and disclosure (GRI, IFRS S1/S2, TCFD, SASB, CSRD); or (iv) climate policy, environmental economics, or natural-capital valuation.
- Expertise in sustainability, sustainability finance and policy instruments, and their application to complex environmental, social, governance, and economic challenges.
- Ability to evaluate the sustainability of corporate strategies, investment portfolios, policies, and projects, with a focus on innovative finance- and policy-driven solutions for the low-carbon, green economy.
- Proven capability in fostering interdisciplinary approaches, entrepreneurship, and leadership in global sustainability issues, including climate change mitigation and adaptation, ESG integration, and sustainable finance.
- The candidate should be capable of teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels in sustainability and green economy. Preference will be given to those willing to teach sustainable finance and ESG, carbon management, climate policy and economics, and sustainability reporting standards.
- A demonstrated record of successful teaching experience at an accredited university.
- Ability to integrate industry insights into curriculum development and classroom instruction, ideally with prior consulting, regulatory, financial-sector, or corporate sustainability experience.
- Demonstrated strong scholarly preparation with the ability to teach and publish effectively in English.
- Proven capability in developing and delivering professional workshops.
- Proven teaching experience in online learning environments.
- Ability to teach and engage learners effectively in online undergraduate and graduate programs.
- Must meet the academic qualification requirements of the School of Sustainability and Green Economy, the University, the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR), and relevant accreditation bodies (CAA-UAE).
