Post-doctoral position at UCA (full time, 24 months)

University Clermont Auvergne is offering a 24-month post-doc position in economics, based in Clermont-Ferrand, France.

The candidate will contribute to the research project “Risks of natural disasters and socio-economic vulnerability” IDEX/I-SITE CAP 20-25 funded by the French government since 2017 ( ). The research challenge is interdisciplinary and headed by the Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans (LMV, ) and the Centre d’Etudes et de Recherche sur le Développement International (CERDI, ), two leading research centres at the University Clermont Auvergne in Clermont-Ferrand, France.

The existing databases on historical volcanic activity (GVP, NGDC, UNISDR, EMDAT…) do not provide, or too sparsely, estimates on damages or economic impacts of eruptions. One of the first tasks of the research challenge is to fill this gap by generating estimates of economic impacts of eruptions worldwide in the last decades, as a first step. This should necessitate gathering data on volcanoes, eruptions, socioeconomic characteristics of the affected areas (in the short and long term), and existing damage estimates. Generating estimates of the economic impacts should require exploring the statistical relationships between different kinds of data (from physical data on the eruptions to socioeconomic data). These estimates will finally be gathered in a large database that is expected to be included to the GVM project (, and allowing collaborations with NGDC, UNISDR or the World Bank’s GFDRR, or insurance companies. Using the database in a number of scientific workshop and research papers is also expected.

  • Analysing data on volcanic activity and economic impacts.
  • Establishing a typology of the different economic impacts generated by volcanic eruptions, and defining qualitative and quantitative criteria to be included in the database.
  • Building a comprehensive database.
  • Initiating or strengthening collaborations with existing projects or institutions that manage or use volcanic activity database.

  • Solid background in (development) economics and econometrics. Working on the subdomain of economic impacts of natural disasters would be an advantage.
  • PhD in economics. A record of publications would be an advantage.
  • Experience with building and managing database, generating data. Experience with using geolocalized data / geo-spatial analysis would be an advantage.
  • Willingness to work in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Fluent English.
