Senior researcher / group leader
Bruegel is looking to hire a Senior Fellow, based in Brussels, on part-time bases (~ 50% of time, negotiable). The Senior Fellow will act as the Head of the project “Future of Work and Inclusive Growth Project” and its intellectual steer.
The Senior Fellow will work closely with the Bruegel Director and other Researchers to develop and implement the project strategy as well as the network of stakeholders
in the public policy arena. The Senior Fellow will design, implement and supervise the execution of the entire project, with the support of a postdoc researcher and in collaboration with other Bruegel’s Researchers, Communications and Project teams. S/he will be required to travel to some of the surveyed countries and engage with relevant high-level stakeholders (policy makers, business and civil society representatives) on both national and European level.
FUTURE OF WORK AND INCLUSIVE GROWTH - PROJECT BACKGROUND
Bruegel will carry out an ambitious, three-year-long research project “Future of Work and Inclusive Growth” which will closely analyse the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies on the nature of work, quantity of work and welfare systems.
In the wake of COVID-19, it is more important than ever to assemble a multi-stakeholder and multidisciplinary effort dedicated to supporting workers in a new and evolving economic environment. While there is still uncertainty surrounding the long-term economic implications of the pandemic, we know that Europe’s digital future, and its relationship with its workforce in particular, will be wholly impacted.
The main research questions that are going to be addressed in the project are AI and its distributional effects, “gig” economy and the future of SME’s, impact of AI, the increasing importance of the data economy and technological advancement on work environment and the quality of jobs, and the impact of rising technology on education and human capital investment. The project includes funding for country-specific surveys, case studies, deep analysis and the presentation of the findings through wide national and EU dissemination on a broad range of communication channels. The project will also create a platform for regular exchanges of knowledge and insights through events with different stakeholders, as well as creation of a project-specific advisory committee and an excellence group.
SENIOR FELLOW FOR FUTURE WORK AND INCLUSIVE GROWTH
- Highly recognized scholar with Ph.D. in economics or similar, with more than 10 years of experience.
- Strong interest in policy making.
- Strong experience in analysing policy-relevant issues in the area of labour markets, labour law, economics of innovation, welfare, wages, education, and/or skill demand. Readiness to study the intersections with AI and technological development thereof.
- In-depth knowledge of the EU and personal network of policy-relevant stakeholders.
- Outstanding ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to contribute to all types of publication including Bruegel’s blog series, podcasts and online events.
- Dedication to high quality and accurate work.
- Strong empirical skills.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills and abilities.
- Good writing and communications skills.
- Knowledge of English language at a professional level. Knowledge of at least another European language is a plus.
- Capable of delivering accurate and high-quality work within short deadlines.
- Contribute to organising events.
- High analytical skills and attention to details.
- Ready to travel in order to participate in international events and engage with EU institutions and European country authorities.
- Team player.
- In addition to leading the project s/he is also expected to contribute to the Bruegel events and other outreach activities.
