The Department of Economics at Ghent University (Belgium) has two vacant teaching and research assistant (AAP) positions, one to be filled in the domain ‘Macroeconomics, Policy and Econometrics’ and one in the domain ‘Banking and Finance’. Knowledge of Dutch for these positions is desirable. For the position in ‘Banking and Finance’, candidates are preferably available immediately.
In addition, the department has up to 7 vacant mandates (fellows) that are predominantly focused on research with a view to obtaining a PhD and with limited (max 10%) teaching-related tasks.
Starting date of these positions is 1 September 2025 at the earliest. Except for the teaching and research assistant position in Banking and Finance, of which the appointment starts as soon as possible. Applications have to be received by 18 February 2025.
YOUR TASKS
For the position in ‘Banking and Finance’, candidates are preferably available immediately. Your duties are as follows:
- You devote a minimum of 50% of your assignment to scientific research in the context of preparing a PhD thesis.
- You provide assistance in the department's teaching either in the field of macroeconomics or in the field of ‘Banking and Finance’.
- You assist students with their bachelor's or master's thesis in the various programmes in which the department teaches.
- You contribute to the internal and external services of the department.
From the 7 vacant mandates (fellows), five of these mandates concern research in specific areas of the department:
- two mandates in ‘quantitative and empirical macroeconomics’;
- one in data science
- one in labour economics and welfare
- one in international economics.
Two of these mandates are more general in the research areas of the department: ‘Banking & Finance’, ‘Environmental Economics’, ‘International Economics, “Labour Economics and Welfare” or “Macroeconomics, Policy and Econometrics”. We encourage international students to apply for these mandates. Professors of the department also look at the pool of candidates for recruitment of researchers on their projects.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- You hold a degree of Master of Science in Economics, or a closely related field and belong to the top 20% of your class. The degree requirements need to be fulfilled at the start of your appointment.
- Candidates who will obtain their diploma in the academic year 2024-25 can also apply for these positions.
- An additional advanced or research master degree in economics is an advantage.
- Candidates who do not have a master's degree that was awarded in a country of the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland or the UK must also submit GRE test scores or GMAT scores (percentile ranking).
- For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) must be submitted.
- You have a strong interest in scientific research with a view to obtaining a PhD.
- Teaching experience or participation in extra training, conferences, etc. is recommended.
- You have excellent didactic and communication skills.
WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU
- We offer you a two-year appointment, which may be renewed twice for two years, on condition that the previous term was given a positive evaluation. Attention: If you have been previously appointed as a junior assistant or doctoral fellow at a university within the Flemish Community, this appointment will be deducted from the maximum term of appointment, which is six years at the most according to the Codex of Higher Education
- Your appointment will start on 1 September 2025 at the earliest, except for the teaching and research assistant position in Banking and Finance, of which the appointment starts as soon as possible.
