Julia Cagé (Professor of Economics, Science Po) and David Yanagizawa-Drott (Professor of Economics, University of Zurich) have been honored with the 2025 Yrjö Jahnsson Award for their impactful research on political economy and media. 

Cagé's and Yanagizawa-Drott's work, spanning France, the USA, and Africa, emphasizes the powerful influence of media, including social media, on shaping political beliefs and actions. They warn against the risks associated with controlled media and stress the importance of media independence for a robust democracy. 

The prestigious award, established in 1993 by the Finnish Yrjö Jahnsson Foundation, recognizes European economists under 45 who have made significant contributions to theoretical and applied research essential to the economics field in Europe. 

The Award Committee, chaired by Kalina Manova and including members Esther Duflo, Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln, Ari Hyytinen, and Marco Ottaviani, selected Cagé and Yanagizawa-Drott for their groundbreaking work in the political and media spheres. Their research highlights the critical need for a free and independent media landscape to uphold democratic principles and safeguard against the potentially detrimental effects of media manipulation.
