The Business Department of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) offers a Master of Research (MRes) and a PhD programme for students with curious mindsets interested in understanding the business world from a rigorous and multidisciplinary perspective.
The programme offers specializations in the main areas of business: Accounting, Finance, Management, and Marketing.
The program is academically very demanding as it provides students with the statistical-econometric tools and the theoretical knowledge needed to study the business reality with analytical lenses.
The Master of Research is offered by the Business Administration Department whose outstanding faculty and commitment to quality instruction and first-class research are a guarantee for incoming students from all over the world (more than 80% of our students are from outside Spain).
The Business Department is ranked 1st in the Spanish system of public universities and it is the only AACSB-accredited Business Department in the Spanish public system.
UC3M is recognized by its high-standards of meritocracy and internationalization.
The graduate program
The two-year Master of Research provides a thorough preparation for the PhD and as such it is considered as the first part of the Doctoral program for the students who wish to continue their doctoral studies.
The Doctoral program consists of the two years of thorough coursework (MRes) followed by three years of thesis writing under the guidance of an expert supervisor (PhD).
The master program combines core courses, and specialized courses in these areas:
As a public institution, we are committed to equal opportunity. We offer financial aid to students in good standing in the form of tuition fee waivers and a monthly stipend. Financial support is extended to those students continuing into the PhD.
Students in this program generally have completed a Bachelor's Degree in Economics, Business Administration (with a quantitative basis), Statistics, Mathematics or Engineering. Most of them are recent graduates or have recently completed another postgraduate degree with a less academic oriented program.
The ideal candidate should possess intellectual curiosity, a strong desire to excel in an academic environment, advanced communication skills in English, excellent academic credentials and a robust quantitative background. Students with a weak background in statistics and economic theory are considered only if they come from a very prestigious university or have other strong compensating characteristics. These students, if accepted, are expected to do specific online preparation courses in advance so that on arrival they are at the same level as their fellow students.
The master’s principal objective is to rigorously train students in analytical skills so that they are able to tackle with analytical lenses today’s business problems. These skills are very valuable both in the corporate and academic world.
The aim for the students continuing to the PhD is to give them solid methodological and theoretical foundations to become internationally renowned researchers in their area of specialization.
After completion of the MRes, the majority of our students continue into the PhD programme at Uc3M or in other institutions. After the PhD, our students have been placed in academic positions at reputed universities and government institutions.
The students who go to work after the Master are placed at research oriented institutions or private companies that seek candidates with highly analytical profiles.
