The Master in Business and Finance is a research master, with specializations in Accounting, Finance, Management, and Marketing. The program is academically very demanding as it provides students with the statistical-econometric tools, skills, as well as the empirical and theoretical knowledge needed to produce top-level research that is publishable in top academic journals and pursue a PhD and careers in research and teaching.
The Master is offered by the Business Administration department whose outstanding faculty and commitment to quality instruction and first-class research are a guarantee for incoming students from all over the world (more than 80% of our students are from outside Spain).
The graduate program
The two-year Master (120 ECTS) provides a thorough preparation for the PhD and as such it is considered as the first part of the Doctoral program in Business and Finance. The program consists of this Master, followed by three years of thesis writing (to obtain a Phd in Business and Finance). The master program has a first year that covers statistics, econometrics, and empirical methods, as well as microeconomics, strategic management and financial economics, plus the basic area courses (management & marketing: marketing, organizational theory, innovation management, and human resource management) (accounting & marketing: accounting, corporate finance I & II, dynamic asset pricing).
In the second year, students combine specialized courses to meet their research profile (for example: Accounting, Algorithmic Finance, Asset Pricing & Market Microstructure, Corporate Finance & Banking, Strategy, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Personnel Economics & Human Resource Management, Supply Chain & Operations Management, Quantitative Marketing, or Consumer Behavior
The Business Administration department usually offers financial aid to students in good standing in the form of tuition waivers and a stipend that is expected to be around 800 euros per month for the 2016/17 academic year. Financial support is generally extended to those continuing into the PhD in Business and Finance.
Students in this program generally have completed a Bachelor's Degree in Economics, Business Administration (with a quantitative basis), Statistics, Mathematics or Engineering. Most of them are recent graduates or have recently completed another postgraduate degree with a less academic oriented program.
The ideal candidate should possess intellectual curiosity, a strong desire to excel in an academic environment, advanced communication skills in English, and a robust quantitative background. Students with a weak background in statistics and economic theory are considered only if they come from a very prestigious university or have other strong compensating characteristics. These students, if accepted, are expected to do specific online preparation courses in advance so that on arrival they are at the same level as their fellow students.
The master’s principal objective is to train internationally renowned researchers in all areas related to accounting, finance, management and marketing.
As a research-oriented masters program, the majority of our students continue into the PhD program. From there, we have placed students in academic positions at University College London, Copenhagen Business School, Stockholm University, Cass Business School (City of London), Erasmus University, Max Planck Institute, Lancaster University, ITAM, IESE, Instituto de Empresa, Universidad de Navarra, and Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. In China, we have placed students at Jinan University, Central University of Finance and Economics, Xiamen University, and Zhongnan University of Economics and Law. Others have continued their careers in research departments at government institutions, such as the Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores (Stock exchange supervisor). Some students have preferred to move to the private sector, and have found jobs at Goldman Sachs, KPMG, CommerzBank or Repsol YPF.
