About the Program

The Master’s program in International Development and Public Policy responds to the demand for applied training in the fields of Public Policy and Development, tailored to attract high quality international students from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, from the social sciences and humanities, to economics, political science, and engineering. 

Students will be exposed to the fields of economics, management, political science, and quantitative methods, with direct application to Public Policy and Development. At the same time, students will develop an empirical approach to applied issues through Policy Analysis Project (PAP). 

The degree program aims to provide a sustainable response to the needs of decision makers by providing them with analytical skills, awareness, and personal development at an appropriate level to support the performance of governmental and non-governmental organizations, including companies, in demanding and diverse socio-economic contexts.

NOVA Masters

Master’s Applications Fall Intake 2023/24

Eligibility criteria:

  • Prospects keen on learning the questions behind public policies that can come from different backgrounds: from management and economics, passing through international relations or other social sciences, till engineering or other analytical degrees. However, if you have limited quantitative skills you may need to complete bridging courses in August.
  • Candidates are encouraged to provide evidence of English language proficiency at level B2. No knowledge of Portuguese is required.
  • For this program, we will receive applications from pre-experience profiles, with an average of two years of professional activity, and also young practitioners willing to enrich their knowledge on international development and public policy (age equal or below 35 years old recommended. Careers and Placement

The MIDPP provides high-level skills that are demanded in organisations that deal with domestic and international public policy (involving both developed and developing countries). The list of potential job opportunities include international organisations (European Commission, OECD, United Nations sectoral agencies, etc), the civil service of EU and other countries, consultancies that work with the public sector, public relations agencies, and non-governmental organisations.

Nova SBE is currently working towards establishing partnerships with a number of organisations in sectors such as health, education, environment, and different government agencies in Portugal (e.g. Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Employment and Social Security) and abroad (e.g. EU development agency, International Labour Organisation). These partnerships may lead to traineeships and or job opportunities for MIDPP students and graduates.
