Develop expertise in devising solutions to real-world problems in the Master's program Economics, together with students from all over the world. Society faces several pressing challenges, including biodiversity loss, climate change, poverty, inequality and anti-democratic tendencies. With your understanding of how social interaction produces these outcomes, you can help governments, businesses and NGOs develop effective policies to address these challenges.

Program and courses

The Master's program in Economics is an excellent choice if you want to acquire the skills to address today's societal challenges. The program is taught by internationally renowned economics professors from Tilburg University. With many international fellow students, there is a great diversity of nationalities in your classroom.

Compose your own curriculum or specialize with one of six different tracks:

  • Behavioral Economics: Address economic problems and questions involving people’s behavior and behavioral change. Become an economist trained to take both the economics and the psychology of behavior into account, as well as the ways it can be affected by policies and strategies. This is a track of MSc Economics.
  • Data Science: Become an economist with hands-on experience in processing and interpreting unstructured (big) data sets. With a strong foundation in statistical modeling and additional training in programming languages, you will have the right skillset to understand the economic value of data and to become an ''analytics translator'': a person who can bridge the technical expertise of data engineers with the end user in any organization (managers, policy makers, etc.). This is a track of MSc Economics.
  • Financial Economics: Combine practical financial management with economic analysis of the markets you invest in. You will address for example urgent problems in the Euro zone, international financial supervision, micro-finance, bank-runs and systemic risk, and taxation of financial institutions. This is a track of MSc Economics.
  • Law and Economics: Use economic methods and models to identify regulations that ensure fair competition while mitigating negative economic effects. You'll combine insights from economics, industrial organization and competition law to business strategies and regulatory policies. Deal with, for example, the lack of competition in certain markets and the response by national governments and the European Union. This is a track of MSc Economics
  • Public Policy: Study important domestic public policy issues, ranging from reduced income inequality and job security, to an affordable health care and pension system. Upon graduation you are an economic expert on how governments can achieve such critical goals, design effective solutions, and finance these activities. This is a track of MSc Economics
  • Sustainable Development: Analyze the sources of economic growth in a country or region, the obstacles to growth and development they face, and their potential negative environmental consequences. Upon graduation you have become trained to evaluate and write policies and strategies towards economic development and sustainable resource use. This is a track of MSc Economics.

Typical courses are:

  • Methods: Python Programming for Economists
  • Econometrics
  • Economics and Psychology of Social Norms and Strategic Behavior
