The Salzburg Centre of European Union Studies (SCEUS) is looking for a PhD student in Economics who is interested in pursuing a PhD project revolving around ‘European Integration’. The position will start as soon as possible (desirably October 2023). The successful candidate will be part of an international, interdisciplinary doctoral college of other researchers with backgrounds in political science and law. Owing to its excellent faculty/researcher ratio, SCEUS provides a superb research environment. Doctoral students benefit from an international, multidisciplinary, and co-operative environment and enjoy close contact with and regular supervision from PLUS professors and visiting scholars.

Benefits:

The successful candidate will receive a gross monthly salary of approx. € 2,458.00 (14 x per year) according to § 26 in conjunction with § 49 of the Collective Agreement for the Austrian Universities. The contract runs for three years. The position covers 30 hours/week and is exempted from teaching. The candidate will spend one semester at a foreign university or research institution that offers expertise and specialised training in her or his field.

The ideal candidate is expected to have:

  • A (research) master’s degree in economics. The degree has to be completed by no later than 30 September 2023.
  • Demonstrable fluency in English, the working language of the doctoral college.
  • Excellent study results and analytical skills.
  • Documented skills in using quantitative methods such as statistical modelling and/or econometrics is a merit.
  • Interest in interdisciplinary research co-operation.

The application should encompass

  • CV.
  • Motivation letter.
  • A short description of the dissertation project. Candidates should outline how the dissertation project contributes to the topic of ‘European integration’.
  • Portfolio of 1-3 of the applicant’s best seminar papers or MA thesis (preferably, but not necessary on issues related to European integration).
  • Transcripts (documenting all courses and exams the applicants have taken at their university) and, if already available, a copy of the applicant’s master’s degree.
  • Two references (i.e. names & addresses of two university professors/lecturers who know the candidate).
