Financial systems are developing rapidly around the global South. These developments increase the need for research into their effects, especially regarding issues of financial inclusion and individual as well as institutional responses.

To this end Heidelberg University’s South Asia Institute and the Department of Economics will host the sixth annual workshop “Finance and Development” in Heidelberg, Germany, on May 16 in the afternoon and May 17, 2024. The workshop will have no parallel sessions.

The keynote speaker is Selim Gulesci (University College Dublin).

We call for papers with a focus on financial decision making in developing countries. Topics of particular interest are:

  • Household and SME finance
  • Financial inclusion of households and enterprises
  • Microfinance, banks and non-bank financial intermediaries
  • Political economy aspects of the financial sector

Papers will be selected by the program committee members Thorsten Beck (European University Institute), Xavier Giné (World Bank), Stefan Klonner (Heidelberg University), Robert Lensink (Groningen University), Lukas Menkhoff (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin), Ugo Panizza (Graduate Institute Geneva), Lore Vandewalle (Graduate Institute Geneva), and Bilal Zia (World Bank). The organizers aim to cover the cost of travel and stay for presenters.

Please send full papers together with a binding nomination of the presenter to fad2024@uni-heidelberg.de by February 2, 2024. Selection decisions will be communicated by March 8. For inquiries, please contact Cristina Cibin at the same email address.
