You will receive a stipend of €2,195 per month (net of taxes) with full health insurance.

The pre-doctoral fellow will work directly with Professor De Loecker on his ERC Market Power Project. The support consists of cleaning data, programming statistical models of firm behavior, and joining regular team meetings, and proof reading. The work will consist of using STATA, and other statistical software (Pyhton, etc.) to support the research projects of Professor De Loecker.

The Pre-Doctoral Fellow will work under Professor Jan De Loecker. Appointment to begin September 1 (or earlier if feasible), 2022, renewable for a second year based on mutual agreement.


The pre-doctoral position is intended to provide experiences that will be most beneficial to applicants intending to pursue graduate work in economics. The work will make the Pre-Doctoral Fellow familiar with the lndustrial Organization literature, specifically on market power and firm performance, and it will aid greatly to gain experience with advanced empirical and statistical methods.

The Pre-doctoral fellow is part of the IO group at KU Leuven, and will have access to all the seminar and academic and social activities at the economics department and the KU Leuven. Fellows typically stay for one or two years before applying to graduate school in Economics.

Eligibility Description

Applicants should be completing (or have completed) a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, have strong quantitative skills, and experience with empirical research methods. Candidates with research experience are strongly preferred, especially those with programming experience in Stata, R, and/or Python. Candidates need not be Economics majors, though they should have a strong interest in and some experience with Economics. Successful candidates have come from a variety of backgrounds (including from undergraduate and graduate programs, industry jobs, and other research assistant positions), and have a range of skill levels and experience with coding.
